Comms Business Awards

Thank you to all who made the 2016 Comms Business Awards the success that it was, including sponsors, all entrants and guests.

The next Comms Business Awards will take place on Thursday 15th June 2017. Well done to all of this years winners!

Guests from the Comms, Data, IT and Mobile Channel will attend to see which companies and industry luminaries will be recognised with awards. Winners are chosen by a panel of impartial industry experts .

The results are one of the best kept secrets in the Comms Industry. Only those people directly involved are aware of the winners’ names until they are announced on the night.

The Awards are recognised for their integrity. There is no charge to enter, with the finalists and winners being selected entirely on merit. It all adds to the cachet of winning. Being chosen as a finalist or receiving a trophy at the Comms Business Awards has real significance.

This event is for you – the Channel – so please support it by joining us and your peers on the evening of the 15 th June 2017.

I have to take this opportunity to thank Miles, Paul and the whole team at Comms Business for a fantastic night, hosted by David Walliams – it’s the event to network with the channel. We’re delighted to have won the Distributor of the Year award and what makes this even more special is the fact it was awarded from a reader vote. We’ve been lucky enough to win 2 major UC awards during the last month NEC EMEA Fastest Growing Distributor award and now the Comms Business Distributor of the Year award. Both help to recognise how much we’ve grown as a business over the last 5 years from when we launched our dedicated UC teams. We’ll continue to adapt and develop these services during the forthcoming year. Needless to say, we’re already looking forward to next years’ event!

John Bird, Head of Systems and Support Services, Exertis

We were delighted to win such a prestigious and much sought after Comms Business Award this year and I am extremely proud of the entire Barclay Communications team. It was great to be part of such a well organised event recognising excellence in the comms, IT and mobile channel industries

Britt Megahey, MD Barclay Communications

It was a great honour to win this award for the third time in five years. In much the same way in which we use our ISO9001:2008 accreditation to drive business improvement, we use this award as a driver to constantly improve our software and to drive innovation in our channel products. Comms Business Awards are a key factor in taking our industry forward year on year.

Phil Reynolds, joint CEO of Oak Telecom

We see the winning of the Comms Business Awards as a tremendous seal of approval…it’s a great get together of like-minded business friends, whether competitors or suppliers, both well organised and professionally delivered. It is slickly organised and the food is good as well.

Andrew Skipsey of M12 Solutions

Apart from receiving an award of course these occasions are a great way to network and meet up with a lot of people within our industry in terms of getting together with old and new friends. This type of event is a great medium and ice breaker.

Terry Ambrose of Trust

We are delighted with this award as it’s a testament to our continuing innovation and ability to deliver…The awards evening is a great opportunity to network within our industry, to meet up with familiar faces and make new contacts.

Home-based business

Last Updated: 5 July 2016

Home-based businesses are a large part of the Australian business community, with nearly one million people running a business from home. Working from home can offer flexibility and convenience, and can often be a great opportunity to start a new career.

If you’re thinking of starting a home-based business or are currently running one, you can maximise your chance of success by ensuring that you understand the risks and government requirements that apply to you.

Operating a small business is not just about working for yourself, it’s also about having the necessary management skills, industry expertise, technical skills, finance, and a long-term vision to grow and succeed.

Things to consider before starting a home-based business

A successful home business requires an owner who is able to handle a wide variety of issues. In many cases, identical home-based businesses can have different levels of success due to different approaches to planning. By thinking through the establishment of your business carefully and taking the time to research and plan your operations, you can create a competitive advantage while also helping secure the future of your business.

If you’re starting a home business, developing a thorough business plan is the best place to begin. To develop your business plan, you need to consider these points about operating from home:

  • Is your home the best location for your business?
  • Can you conduct the type of business you want under local council regulations?
  • What are your legal obligations?
  • Will your home-based business allow you to balance your work and family life?
  • What are the town planning requirements of your local government authority?

Don’t be afraid to ask yourself hard questions about your business. It’s much easier to plan for the future than to react to the unexpected.

Taking the first steps and getting advice

When you’re taking the first steps in starting up a home-based business, take a look at the wide range of government advice and support available. Most state and territory governments provide home-based business kits and fact sheets, which are great for establishing the foundations of your business.

You can access a range of advisory services from the Australian Government. Use Advisory Services to get in touch with your nearest business advisor service.

Networking is also an important way to keep up-to-date with business trends and to create business opportunities and relationships. If you’re operating a business from home, consider joining a business association, check newspapers and business publications, and search our Events to find events relevant to your business.

As well as advice and support from government and those within your network, you should also consider consulting an experienced business adviser, accountant or bank manager. These business advisors are valuable as they may be able to share the experiences of others and provide guidance to you when making important decisions.

Meeting government requirement and regulations

Like all businesses, home-based businesses need to register for business and company names, taxation, and other business licences and permits. Using your home as a place of business may also mean complying with particular state, territory and local government regulations.

The impact of your business activities on the surrouding residential area, particularly pollution, energy use and parking, can all require special permission. Depending on your type of business, you may need special permits relating to zoning, signage, noise levels or health issues.

What to do.

  • See our Registration and licences topic for information about registration for all business types.
  • Read about taxation or insurance for home-based businesses.
  • Download our Business plan guides and templates .
  • Find home-based business assistance in your state or territory.
  • Contact your nearest Business Enterprise Centre for free advice and support.

13 simple online business ideas

Whether it s hobby stores or app development, there are plenty of ways to make some extra cash online. Source: News Limited

STARTING an online business requires a lot less risk than investing in an office or store front.

You can reach a wide national sometimes international customer-base and work from anywhere. With only a basic knowledge of website maintenance and a knack for communication, you can have an online business up and running in days. If you re ready to take the plunge into becoming an online entrepreneur, we ve got 13 ideas to help you get off the ground .

1. Specialised retailer An online store lets you reach customers all over that world and that means you can afford to specialise. Whether it s dollhouse furniture or organic dog food, there s an audience for everything. Using a web hosting service with an integrated shopping cart or e-commerce software, you can have your business up and running in days. Many vendors will even ship products to customers on your behalf which means you don t need to own a lot of inventory.

2. Social media consultant Larger firms can hire an agency or full-time staff member to run their Facebook and Twitter accounts, but small businesses often have to take care of their own social media marketing. With so many other responsibilities, business owners may be too busy or overwhelmed to spend time coming up with a great social media strategy. As a consultant, you can help them determine the best tactics, posting schedules and content for their target audience. As their follower count grows, so will your business.

3. Web design Have you ever been turned off by a business s generic-looking website layout? If you know some HTML and have a good eye for design, you can launch a service to create attractive, easy-to-use websites for small businesses. You can put your skills to good use for business owners who want to take their online presence to the next level. Build up a portfolio of work with smaller freelance jobs, then create your own website to show it off and bring in a steady stream of clients.

4. Resume/cover letter writing It s a tough truth to swallow, but a standout resume and cover letter can make all the difference when you re applying to a job. While listing your career accomplishments might seem like an easy task, the fine art of humble bragging eludes some of us. Get hired to help others get hired by writing stellar CVs. Capitalise on the increasingly important social media branding bandwagon and offer to fix LinkedIn profiles as well.

5. Professional freelancer You might not think of freelancing as a business, but with more and more companies turning to part-time contract workers to fill their skill gaps, it s not hard to imagine making a living providing businesses with a variety of freelance services. Depending on your skill sets, you could work for multiple companies in a variety of fields, offering flexibility and a refreshing change of pace. According to freelance job listing website Freelancer.com, tech services, content creation and web design are popular fields for contract work,

6. Affiliate marketing If you re a person that loves leaving customer reviews on sites like Amazon, stop doing it for free. Word-of-mouth advertising is still a huge lead generator for many companies, and a lot of them are willing to share a portion of their profit with persuasive individuals that will promote their products to the public. If you have a personal website with a large following, this might be easier to accomplish (PR reps are always seeking out brand advocates they can send free samples to). Smart Passive Income breaks down three types of affiliate marketing and explains which one is most profitable.

7. Health/nutrition coach When it comes to nutrition, most people seem to have a mental block: A growing percentage of the adult population is overweight or obese, and many people that want to lose weight and eat better simply don t know where to start. You don t necessarily need to be a registered dietitian (RD) to offer meal plans and diet counselling to your client base, either. With the right combination of personal support and nutrition and exercise knowledge, you could be helping people get healthier through your online service.

8. ebook author Have a ton of knowledge on a particular subject that you want to share with the public? With e-readers becoming more and more commonplace, self-publication is becoming a reality for many writers who might never get picked up by publishing companies. With the right marketing tools, you could successfully publish your own book on anything from cooking and weight loss to real estate. Inbound Pro s advice from successful e-Book authors offers tips for writing content that sells.

9. Remote technical support Many small businesses don t have room in their budget for a full-time IT employee, so when their systems go on the fritz, they ll usually call a computer whiz friend or family member. Eliminate their need to call in a favour and offer immediate remote technical assistance.

10. Vintage store Bargain hunters and second-hand shop enthusiasts can turn a nice profit reselling their vintage clothing finds. Brand yourself by setting up an independent website as your virtual storefront, but use a managed service like Google Checkout to handle transactions. High-resolution images and catchy copy for your products will make you stand out in the sea of internet users trying to sell their used items.

Start your own online store to finance your spending habit. Source: News Limited

11. Handmade craft seller While you could run a clothing shop on sites like Etsy, these platforms are especially suited to crafters who can produce a steady supply of quality handmade items like crocheted blankets or unique painted glassware. Start-up costs are extremely low if you purchase your materials in bulk from a craft supplier, and if you can turn orders around quickly, you ll be making a profit in no time at all. It s even possible to turn your store into a full-time gig.

12. Teaching online courses You don t need a degree in education to teach people how to do something you know inside and out. According to Fox, online course enrolment on the rise, you can help others enrich their lives by offering classes in an area you re passionate about, like yoga or baking. Create instructional packets and videos for download from a website, or schedule real-time Skype lessons with clients.

13. App development Mobile applications are more popular than ever, and people are willing to pay good money for ways to manage their lives from their smartphones. If you have a great idea and happen to know coding, you can run with it and create your app yourself. If you just have an idea, there are plenty of software developers looking to collaborate with people on app creation.

The Most Profitable Home-Based Businesses

When art major Melissa Schmechel graduated from Smith College in 2004, she chose to cut her teeth at two small shops in San Francisco. But she also had grander entrepreneurial designs.

“I saw small studios and letter-press printers make it work on their own,” says Schmechel. “I felt like there was a big enough market out there.”

Skills honed, the entrepreneurial 26-year-old launched her own graphic design shop, Darling Design, out of her apartment last year. She figures that an office lease would have cost an extra $1,000 per month. Sure, the home office can get a bit crowded–Schmechel shares the cramped three-bedroom rental with two roommates–but she’s happy she did it. “I couldn’t have started the business without doing it in my house,” she says.

In Pictures: The 10 Most Profitable Home-Based Businesses

Schmechel charges $50 an hour to spruce up brochures, business cards, catalogs, case studies and occasionally Web sites. Her tools of the trade include a computer and basic printer. (For high-end printing, she heads to Kinko’s.) Additional overhead: a mere $10 per month for a Web site hosting service. Initial marketing amounted to posting an ad on Craigslist. Darling Design’s first-year profits. about $50,000, she says.

Who needs a nasty commute when you can make a decent buck but a few feet from your kitchen? Over half of all U.S. businesses are now based out of an owner’s home, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. With the economy shedding jobs, the ranks of the self-employed may well keep swelling. Plenty more entrepreneurs may look to eliminate rent and fuel costs to pinch pennies.

With the help of Sageworks, a Raleigh, N.C.-based private-company data provider, Forbes.com has assembled a list of the 10 most profitable businesses–on a pretax basis–that could be run out of a home. The data were drawn from eight years worth of financial statements (nearly an entire business cycle) for tens of thousands of privately held U.S. companies with annual revenues under $1 million and bucketed by Internal Revenue Service classifications. Average pretax profits ranged from 8% to 14%.

We included only industries for which Sageworks had data from at least 35 companies, and we eliminated categories too broad to be meaningful. One big caveat: The data have an inherent positive survivorship bias, as some companies captured in earlier years may have failed along the way.

Facilitators–from brokerages to consultancies–nabbed five of the 10 spots; creators, such as specialty design shops, earned three; and repair outfits rounded out the rest. To be sure, not all will fare equally (or well) in the economic downturn.

Case in point: securities and commodities brokers, who stand atop the list with an average pretax margin of 14%. While confidence in the markets is shaken and competition from E*Trade and Charles Schwab is stiff, trusted brokers able to develop a book of business by giving financial advice (not simply executing trades) can still do well. All it takes is a computer, a speedy Internet hookup and some trading software from the likes of Automatic Data Processing. Typical commissions: 2% to 3% of the value of each trade.

To get started, first you’ll need approval from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. Required paperwork includes a business plan, a trial balance sheet and monthly projections of income and expenses. Registration fee: about $5,000, depending on the types of securities you deal with. If you haven’t already bagged your broker’s license, get ready to pass a series of exams, including the six-hour Series 7 Exam and perhaps the Series 63 or 66. One caveat: You can only take these exams after working for several months at a registered firm–and all of your employees must pass the same tests.

Consulting is good work, if you can get it. Consultants give guidance to companies looking for help with everything from marketing to environmental remediation–and for that they clock an average 10% operating margin. Many consultants can easily work from home when they’re not with clients on site, and most charge on a per-project basis rather than by the hour. Two big challenges: marketing and pricing the service. For more on the first, check out “Twelve Innovative Marketing Techniques “; for more on pricing, try “How To Figure Out Your Daily Rate .”

If you’d rather create than facilitate, learn how to code. Software is a very scalable business–simply write a program once and sell lots of copies. But it’s a hits business, too. Consider that the most expensive applications for the Apple iPhone typically sell for around $10–of which the programmer might get 70%–but most are free.

Techies can hedge their bets by doing some trouble-shooting work, too. On the service side, “the margins can be high because you’re not competing with global operators,” says Avron Barr, principal at Aldo Ventures, a software technology consulting firm in Aptos, Calif. Taken together, the “software publishing” bucket–which the IRS takes to mean both coders and help-desk types–boasts an average 14% pretax margin.

The nasty economy could put some coin in cobblers’ coffers, as consumers look to fix up furniture, appliances and leather goods rather than shell out for the new stuff. According to Sageworks, the average pretax margin of firms under the “Personal and Household Goods Repair and Maintenance” classification is 10%.

Maintenance work from the comfort of your garage or basement is challenging on two fronts: overall set-up (equipment, ventilation) and finding clients. Take shoe repair. Ben Roush, a cobbler in Omaha, Neb. says that used finishing machines (with the proper buffering and sanding devices) go for $10,000; stitchers, $1200; and hydraulic presses for adding glue, $300. Some repair work requires more electrical power, too: 220 volts versus the typical 110 volt capacity in most houses.

One warning about working from home: The walls may start closing in. “I’m looking to move into a studio space for part of the week,” says Schmechel. “It was really great at first to work from home, but each day, I find it harder and harder psychologically to do it.” For an unvarnished look at home entrepreneurship, check out “The Highs And Horrors Of Home-Based Businesses .”

Best Drop Shipping Companies (September 2016)

The world of dropshipping is often considered the easiest way to sell products online. Although dropshipping comes with various difficulties, it is a viable way to start an online business without much upfront capital. The basic idea behind dropshipping companies is that you contact a manufacturer or wholesaler who might be willing to partner with you. After that, you build an ecommerce shop and start selling some items that fall in a niche, like electronics or glow in the dark items. The more niche the categories the better.

The key with dropshipping is that you don t carry any inventory. The wholesaler makes the products for you, stores them in their warehouses and ships them to the customers when you submit the orders. So, in a sense, you don t even have to see the items in order to make money. Downsides to dropshipping include less product control, less shipping control, trouble with returns, slower deliveries and smaller margins.

You may also be interested in these articles:

However, if you re on a tight budget and you generate a quality strategy, dropshipping might just work well for you. One of the toughest parts of dropshipping is to find a company that would provide products. So, we put together a list of killer places to find products to dropship and sell on your store. Enjoy!

The primary feature you get from Oberlo is the importing from AliExpress. Since so many dropshippers use AliExpress to find and sell products, it’s a wonder as to why a tool like this hasn’t come around sooner. Not only do you gain access to thousands of suppliers on AliExpress, but the product images, details and prices are all situated right there for you.

Drop Shipping Companies: Doba

Doba is one of the more comprehensive dropshipping companies, since it not only provides a detailed directory of manufacturers and wholesalers, but offers an interface for simply grabbing the products you want without having to partner with multiple dropshippers.

Generally, you may have to partner with and communicate with ten or twenty dropshippers. With Doba, you simply find a product you want to sell, list it on your website and process the sale with Doba. The Doba company contacts the dropshipper and sends the product to the customer, cutting out the tedious dropshipper management process.

Salehoo is similar to Doba, but it has more of a focus on presenting a detailed directory for companies you can partner with for your business. The website has beautiful category tools for you to filter and search based on the products you re trying to sell, along with a market research lab to decide on the most popular products to sell on your store. The best part is that Salehoo manages a consistent blog and forum so you can learn and chat with others who are in the same boat as you.

Alibaba is one of the largest websites in the world, and one of the best parts of the site is that you can find manufacturers for your products, at relatively low costs. Keep in mind that you shouldn t just type in the product you want to sell and contact the manufacturer. You must go to the search bar, type in dropshipper, then filter down to the desired product.

The Alibaba platform has thousands of manufacturers, and many of them don t offer dropshipping.

When you complete a Google search for finding dropshippers, you may notice that many of the directories are filled with spam or non-existent companies. This is a huge problem, since you don t want to waste time and money finding a viable dropshipping partner.

With World Wide Brands, every dropshipper in the directory is certified, so you can expect a response from each one. The World Wide Brands site sets you up with the manufacturer s contact info after you find a suitable match. After that, you can contact them whenever you want and build a relationship.

The WholeSale Central company doesn t have the best website, but it s a decent tool for filtering through categories like apparel, electronics and leather. The dropshippers are then listed with details for you to click on and view. When you click through to one of the dropshippers it sends you to the manufacturer s website, meaning there are no middle men to work though.

Feel free to contact certain dropshippers, and use the WholeSale Central page to find options that are closer to you geographically. Traditionally, this can lead to a more reliable business partnership.

Dropship Direct lets you create a free account, giving you access to its huge inventory of products. This solution works similar to Doba, in that you choose your product first, then you can request to have that item shipped to your customer. This way, you don t necessarily have to be in contact with the dropshipper. However, that option is available if needed.

Sunrise Wholesale is a service that dropships products directly to your customers. You gain access to over 15,000 brand name products, and you can search for these products through the Sunrise Wholesale site. Profit from the site by selling through places like Amazon and eBay, or consider setting up your own website for a better online presence. Not to mention, this solution also helps you connect with ecommerce platforms like Shopify and Bigcommerce.

Wholesale 2b requires you to sign up for a plan, but you don t get charged a dime for simply browsing the product database. Search for certain items and categories, and when you find something to sell, post it on your site for people to buy from you. After that, the Wholesale 2b site takes a commission, but it also sends out the product to your customer.

Contact Relevant Businesses and Go to Trade Shows

Quite often the best way to find a long-term partner for you dropshipping business is to start locating businesses in your area, or around the world, with a simple Google search. Cold call the companies and ask for someone who might be able to help you with dropshipping. The goal is to locate manufacturers who may be willing to take orders from you and ship upon request.

You can also check out trade shows, which puts in some face time with the wholesalers, improving your chances of building a relationship with them.

Over to You

Have you ever had the chance to take on dropshipping as a business? Share your story, or let us know if you have any questions about getting a dropshipping company up and running.

This Article addresses mutual fund governance, explaining how it has recently become entangled with the norms and rules of corporate governance. At one level, it is understandable that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and courts have viewed mutual funds as a type of ordinary corporation. Both mutual funds and corporations are separate legal entities, having directors and shareholders. Directors of each are held to fiduciary duties, charged with serving shareholders’ interests, and expected to aspire to best practices. However, there are fundamental differences between mutual funds and ordinary corporations. This Article contends that these differences have important implications for governance, differences that should lead to the disentanglement of mutual fund governance from corporate governance.

We examine firm lifecycles of 3,081 IPOs from 1996–2012. We find that small IPOs have a different lifecycle than other, larger companies. Within five years of an IPO, only 55% of small capitalization companies remain listed on a public exchange, compared to 61% and 67% for middle and large capitalization companies, respectively. We examine various theories explaining the decline of the small IPO. We find only minor evidence that regulatory changes caused the decline of the small IPO. The decline appears instead to be more attributable to the historical unsuitability of small firms for the public market. Absent economic or market reforms that change small firm quality, further regulatory reforms to enhance the small IPO market are thus unlikely to be effective or bring firms into the public market that have the horsepower to remain publicly listed.

In Section 1502 of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, Congress instructed the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to draft rules that would require public companies to report annually on whether their products contain certain Congolese minerals. This unprecedented legislation and the SEC rulemaking that followed have inspired an impassioned and ongoing debate between those who view these efforts as a costly misstep and those who view them as a measured response to human rights abuses committed by the armed groups that control many mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This Article for the first time brings empirical evidence to bear on this controversy.

In 2008, the Securities and Exchange Commission made waves by deciding to regulate the nascent peer-to-peer lending industry. Only two lending platforms survived the SEC’s entry into a previously lightly-regulated market. Under this regulatory setup, the SEC would regulate the lending-investing process, while other agencies like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Federal Trade Commission would regulate the borrower side of the business. This Article argues that the existing bifurcated system works and is continually getting better as the SEC amends existing exemptions and introduces new regulations to smooth the path for financial innovation.

Since 1977, with the enactment of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, the United States Department of Justice has played a leading role in applying the Act’s anti-bribery, books and records, and internal controls provisions in enforcement proceedings against numerous companies and individuals worldwide. In November 2015, the Department of Justice took the unprecedented step of hiring a Compliance Counsel to guide its prosecutors in decision-making in corporate prosecutions and in benchmarking corporate compliance. This Memorandum is composed as an open letter to the Compliance Counsel, focusing on how she and the Department of Justice should go about that critical benchmarking function.

Eric J. Chang’s provocative article, www.PayDayLoans.gov: A Solution for Restoring Price-Competition to Short-Term Credit Loans—which, as its title suggests, proposes to facilitate price competition in the payday lending market by creating a federal online exchange for payday lenders to post lending rates—has sparked thoughtful reactions among consumer borrowing experts. This Response provides constructive criticism to Chang’s proposal, arguing that such an exchange is unlikely to meet its goal of restoring price competition and offering tweaks that would raise the likelihood of doing so.

Ratio Analysis

Important numbers that (really) matter to investors

This is one of the most important steps in creating a business plan, but is often overlooked or misunderstood. Who really cares about your ratios? Your loan underwriter or your investor. We automatically generate a ratios report for your company and then compare your ratios to those of your industry’s averages, using the same analysis that loan underwriters use to evaluate your business. We then explain to you what each ratio means and how you can improve yours. You can quickly spot where your performance needs improvement and correct those concerns early in your development, before they become a painful reality.

Built-in Help

Knowledge is power

The science of writing business plans, especially financial forecasting, isn’t easy. Whenever we ask for your input, a rich Knowledge Base is at your fingertips to explain exactly what each topic means. The Enloop system guides users through the planning process, asking essential questions that force entrepreneurs to think through the difficult parts of planning a business and then provides vital feedback for an interactive learning experience. Who We are and What We Do

We are Sumy Designs, LLC. Our business is based in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Our History: Sumy Designs was created by two sisters, Susan Sullivan and Amy Masson in 2006. Susan had been working as an advertising and marketing director with a large publishing firm while Amy had been teaching computer technology. After leaving those respective career paths, a friend asked if we’d like to make a website for her. We said yes. A friend of this friend saw that website and asked us to make a website for her. We said yes. And so and so forth and now we have created many, many sites for many happy clients across the US, Canada, and England.

Susan is our designer, in charge of all things creative and beautiful. She has the vision and skills it takes to create custom masterpieces for every project.

Amy is our resident technical expert, with the skills to make every website function as it should.

Interesting fact: While the business is based in West Lafayette, Susan lives in the Dallas Forth Worth area. We work together virtually, via email and video chat, to seamlessly design, manage, and maintain projects of all sizes.

Where’d you come up with the name Sumy? It’s a combination of our first names. SU san and aMY.

Our Support Team

While Amy does the behind the scenes work and Susan does the design, there are a lot of other areas that need attention, so we have recruited a team of fabulous people to work with us to bring these jobs to completion. Being a virtual business, we are able to employ people from all over the country to work with us.

Sale of sports business, a positive for Zee: The Hindu Business Line – Mobile edition #small #business #insurance

#zee business

#

Zee Entertainment Enterprises has decided to sell its sports business (TEN Sports channels) to Sony Pictures Networks India and its affiliates for $385 million.

The sale will help Zee exit its loss-making sports broadcasting business, which contributed ₹631 crore (about 11 per cent) to its consolidated revenue in 2015-16.

The sports business incurred a net loss of ₹37 crore, against a profit of ₹1,027 crore from consolidated operations during the year.

It was in 2006 that Zee acquired a 50 per cent stake (raised subsequently) each in Taj TV, Mauritius, which owns TEN Sports channels, and in Taj Television India, the distribution arm of TEN Sports in India.

A report from Ambit Capital shows that the sports business has incurred losses at the operating level in all years except one since 2005-06.

This is in sharp contrast to the company’s profitable general entertainment channel (GEC) broadcasting business.

Zee has a strong foothold in the Hindi and regional languages GEC space, which forms a chunk of the TV viewership base. Even as it is exiting the sports genre, it is looking at expanding its presence in the regional GEC space (Tamil Nadu, for instance). In January, it acquired Sarthak TV, a leading GEC in Odisha.

TEN Sports has the broadcast rights to the events organised by the cricketing boards of five countries, including South Africa, West Indies and Pakistan, as also to other non-cricket events such as wrestling, football and tennis.

But, it does not have the broadcasting rights for some lucrative events such as the cricket matches organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, thereby impacting the company’s subscription revenue from this business.

How to Find a Qualified Small Business Advisor

Business planning, financial projections, employee management, and customer acquisitions are just a few of the issues that small business owners wrestle with. Startups and fast-growing companies have even more challenges — and that’s where a business advisor is most valuable. Whether they’re helping with starting a new business or managing an existing enterprise, small business advisors are seasoned professionals that help with strategic business planning and crucial operational decisions.

Alas, great small business advisors, like great football coaches, are rare. Here are some tips to finding the perfect small business coach, so you can score a few more touchdowns and experience a lot fewer fumbles:

1) Look for an advisor who’s managed a small business – Small businesses are a different animal than large corporations. Find a business coach that understands the special challenges of small business, including recruiting and retaining employees, capital funding, product marketing, and keeping up with technology. Additionally, target an advisor who had success with your biggest business challenge. For instance, if your main roadblock is distribution, target an advisor who is a distribution channels expert.

2) Look for an advisor with credentials – A business advisor doesn’t necessarily need credentials, a special license, or a degree to give his opinion on how you should run your business, but it doesn’t hurt. Because anyone can set up shop as an advisor, look for someone with a business degree, MBA, or other coaching credentials such as CPCP (Certified Professional Coach Program), ACC (Associate Certified Coach), PCC (Professional Certified Coach), or MCC (Master Certified Coach) for added peace of mind that you’re getting good advice.

3) Choose an advisor who focuses on your niche – An advisor that specializes in your industry will speak your language, understand your business concerns, and know the competitive umbrella your business operates under. If you’re lucky, he’ll have some great industry contacts too.

4) Find an advisor through SCORE – SCORE Counselors to America’s Small Business is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate entrepreneurially-minded individuals nationwide in the creation, growth, and success of small businesses. With over 11,200 volunteers nationwide, SCORE offers free help with small business planning and other advice. Find a SCORE advisor through the website’s handy search function or visit your local SCORE office.

5) Check out the Worldwide Association of Business Coaches (WABC) – Founded in 1997, the WABC is an international association aimed at the leadership and development of worldwide business coaching. The WABC requires rigorous membership requirements based upon coaching experience, references, and business expertise. With over 1,000 business coaches spanning 30 countries, the WABC is a great advisory resource.

6) Search BusinessAdviser – BusinessAdviser.com is an independent consultancy international businesses directory. Search by location, firm or specialty.

7) Ask for referrals – Last but not least, ask your mentors, work associates, and members of social networks who they have used and would recommend in a business advisor capacity.

    #most successful businesses

Despite being a huge economy that ranks at number 3 in the GDP (PPP) league globally, India is a nation where the agriculture and unorganized sectors dominate employment generation. Contrary to what a lot of people may believe, we do not have a majority of our workforce employed by the organized sector.

The Indian workforce can be categorized by a simple and approximate formula – 65-35-15-85. Of the entire workforce, around 65% are engaged directly or indirectly in Agriculture, a massive number. This number will include farmers, farm labourers, transport workers, mandi workers, marketing people, rural business persons of all types etc. That leaves around 35% of Indian workforce, which we can call non-farm workforce. Of this 35%, not more than 15% are employed by the organized sector. They are paid salaries on fixed dates (almost), enjoy statutory benefits and can associate their work with some brandname of some credible size. The remaining 85% (of this 35%) are engaged in unorganized sector, that does not enjoy any of these characteristics. Are these not shocking statistics, for India, after nearly seven decades of economic independence? By the way, I have not counted homemakers and housewives, whose contribution anyway does not get counted in the GDP calculations.

We are a nation of 1.3 billion people (that’s 130,00,00,000 people). So it is clear there is abundance of labour available in India, that is untrained, unskilled (or at best partially skilled) and has a poor chance of making it in the formal organized sector. What do these people do? Well, they create small businesses of their own, and get on with their lives quietly.

Mainstream academia and media often speak disparagingly of these millions as “Mom-and-Pop” shops, because the comparison yardstick is the West, where most of retail is organized. But if these millions were to give up their businesses, and start pestering the governments of India (central and state) forSarkarijobs, the whole system will crumble and break down in no time. We should be very thankful to these entrepreneurs who quietly create opportunities for themselves, and even employ many more.

I assume by small. the question means really small, even micro. And “top 10” must be the range and spread. The ones I am listing below, are usually proprietorships of the most unstructured format. I am intentionally not counting the Small-scale enterprises in the manufacturing sector. I am also leaving out individual contractors that use the internet economy to work from home, on projects anywhere in the world (these are educated and very capable people).

In my opinion, ten of the smallest of businesses (not counting agriculture related work) that are widespread across India, totally taken for granted, and where literally crores of Indians (1 crore = 10 million) are self-employed, can be listed as:

    1. Small retail shops – Millions of them spread across the length and breadth of India. They are usually owned by a single family, and entire work is done by two or three members of the same family. They do not formally book every transaction, and issue no receipts. Hence, they generally pay no taxes at all. In fact, if they are forcibly dragged in the tax net, many of them will simply become unviable! So what will happen? Right now we have around 1 million young people entering the workforce each month. Or 1.2 crore each year. We will substantially increase the number if these shops collapse.
    2. Paan ki dukaan – Indians love their paan, supari, cigarettes, tobacco, and gutkha! And this gives birth to the legion of Paan Shops we see everywhere. They form a key part of the marketing plans of consumer goods giants like Unilever etc. As they say, the Ps of marketing are Product-Price-Promotion-P lace-and-Paan shops.
    3. Readymade Garment shops – Thousands of these small shops cater to the needs of the local communities they serve. While all conceivable brands are available in big malls, the small shops cater at an atomic level to their customers’ needs. And they are busy all year round. One can be often surprised at the economical rates these offer.
    4. Tea stalls – Popularly called chai-ki-tapri. these are hangout places (for a few minutes) for the local small office-goers, daily wage labourers, and anybody passing by. Usually run by a single entrepreneur, they employ chhotus, young boys barely 8 or 10 years of age. It can be seen everywhere in India. They serve tea (of coffee), some basic snacks like pakoras, etc. Wholesomely unhealthy if taken on a daily basis.
    5. Auto Repair shops – If you do not wish to spend a lot of money to get your vehicle (2 wheeler or 4 wheeler) repaired at the branded sales outlet or service centre, then the roadside repair shop is always at your disposal. Business is always brisk, and the technicians working can be amazingly skilled.
    6. Mobile repair / accessories shops – The past few years have seen employment generation through this route. Tiny shops that are run by just one or two people can cater to a vast range of your repair / recharging needs. Found almost everywhere.
    7. Grocery Daily need shops – A type of the small retail shops. Some of them are organizedkirana stores, others much smaller but equally useful. They develop customer relationships through home delivery, some credit, and informal support for a range of needs. Usually have dedicated and loyal clienteles. The arrival of organized retail has, so far, not affected them much.
    8. Small restaurants / coffee shops – Lots of them dot the highways as dhabas. or all commercial roads in cities of all sizes. They are usually much cheaper compared to branded cafes. I remember enjoying a hearty meal (for a family of four) for Rs 36 when we hungrily went to a very small “south Indian” restaurant on a mountain side in Munnar, Kerala. What a meal it was! And what a rush the restaurant was handling. Such experiences make you want to become a food entrepreneur (the yummy margins! ).
    9. Seasonal shops – Every festival in India brings unique buying needs, and that leads to sprouting of such shops in specific areas of all towns and cities. So, during the Ganesh Chaturthi festivals, shops spring up overnight selling pooja samagri (material for religious prayers) and idols. Similarly, Deepawali sees fire-cracker shops and Holi brings with it gorgeously colourful temporary shops. All dealings are naturally in pure cash!
    10. Hawkers of all types – Not to be outdone by the above, we have a whole range of hawkers who shout themselves hoarse strutting their stuff door-to-door, all day long. They do this on bicycles, or thelas, and it must be very exhausting work.

I personally feel that society ought to respect these individuals much more that it currently does. They are the most basic building blocks of our goods and services markets. The entrepreneurial streak of these unsung heroes can be very motivating if we see the sheer struggle their daily lives entail.

As India moves forward, while our economy will get more structured, the simultaneous growth of our population is going to make formal employment generation a huge challenge. Interesting times ahead!

There is a contradiction in the question: What are the top 10 internet business models that are currently the most profitable and easiest to copy in a new market?

The most profitable business model will not be the easiest to copy since by definition anyone can copy that business model, compete with the original business model and so bring down the profits of the business model as a whole.

Examples of most profitable internet business models typically depend on dominating the long-tail. This requires these businesses to operate at a lower cost than if manual / human processing was required, and capitalize on improving the signal to noise ratio using algorithms at scale. It is difficult for substitute businesses to develop the same scale later as collecting huge amounts of long-tail data takes a long time (years)

Google search: Have data on long-tail search terms and creates a market place where participants can bid to reach most relevant customers.

Amazon.com: Have organized information of long-tail products for sale and offer unparalleled selection, prices are reasonable, inventory overheads are low (they need to stock a few items globally compared to a few items per physical store)

Ebay: Created an auction marketplace where buyers can bid for long-tail products offered by sellers world-wide. The larger the number of buyers, the larger the number of sellers and Ebay makes a cut off each transaction.

Wikipedia or Yahoo Answers: Long-tail content is generated by users at little / low expense to the company, content is relevant and used years after it was originally created. Bulk of the content is accessed only a few times every month but collectively drives billions of page views a month. This can be harvested by basic online advertising.

How to Make Your Business Sign Memorable

If you own a brick-and-mortar store, you need a sign out front. It s how customers find you. It s also the first impression you give the general public about your company. Needless to say, making your sign memorable is important. Most businesses make the mistake of designing a sign that s understated or too elegant, they try to blend into their environment, include too much information on the sign, they cheap out on the materials, or they place the sign too high off the ground. The idea is to get people to remember you, not to make it hard to figure out what you do (or that you exist).

Quality is important. It s probably the most important factor in your sign. A cheap sign can be spotted a mile away. If you know you don t have a good sense for quality, ask a friend or business partner for help. In general, you should buy the most expensive sign your company can afford. Buy good materials that stand up to UV light, harsh winds, torrential downpours, ice and snow, and any other extreme weather common to your area.

If you want to make your brand memorable, you have to be a little outrageous audacious even. No one remembers a sign that blends into the background. People remember signs that stick out like a sore thumb. For example, if your business is in a wooded area, consider using colors that contrast, even outright clash, with the scenery. It s not supposed to fit in. On the contrary, it s supposed to get noticed.

Think about businesses that have over the top signage Hard Rock Cafe. The company has a guitar as its logo. In some areas of the country, their signs are 3D, actually coming out of the building. No one forgets these signs after they see them.

Another example is the Hollywood sign in California. It s not a business sign, but it s very memorable. Why? Because it s dramatic, it s grossly oversized, there s nothing near it to distract you, it s in a strange place, and there s something oddly wrong about it the letters are all sitting at different heights instead of each one being perfectly level with the next one.

Don t make your signs overly complicated. A complex sign isn t always a better sign. You should be able to communicate your message simply, clearly, and unequivocally. Think about the signage that Apple uses. It s logo is simple an apple. To be more exact, it s a blue apple with the words Apple Campus One Infinite Loop. That s it. Everyone recognizes the logo and the sign when they see it and they never forget the brand.

You want your customers to want to do business with you. In general, regardless of the color scheme you use, your customers should be enticed to do business with you (or, at least, be enticed to walk in the door). The most attractive companies from the street are the ones with the cleanest signs. In other words, there s not a lot of clutter on the sign.

A simple sign doesn t try to jam in every possible offering of the company, the phone number, the fax, the company name, logo, tag line, etc. It simply tries to convey the business name and possibly a tag line if it s not clear what the company does from its name.

    7(a) Loan Program Eligibility #online #business #degree

    #sba loan requirements

    #

SBA provides loans to businesses; so the requirements of eligibility are based on specific aspects of the business and its principals. As such, the key factors of eligibility are based on what the business does to receive its income, the character of its ownership and where the business operates.

SBA generally does not specify what businesses are eligible. Rather, the agency outlines what businesses are not eligible. However, there are some universally applicable requirements. To be eligible for assistance, businesses must:

    • Operate for profit
    • Be small, as defined by SBA
    • Be engaged in, or propose to do business in, the United States or its possessions
    • Have reasonable invested equity
    • Use alternative financial resources, including personal assets, before seeking financial assistance
    • Be able to demonstrate a need for the loan proceeds
    • Use the funds for a sound business purpose
    • Not be delinquent on any existing debt obligations to the U.S. government

    Ineligible Businesses

A business must be engaged in an activity SBA determines as acceptable for financial assistance from a federal provider. The following list of businesses types are not eligible for assistance because of the activities they conduct:

    • Financial businesses primarily engaged in the business of lending, such as banks, finance companies, payday lenders, some leasing companies and factors (pawn shops, although engaged in lending, may qualify in some circumstances)
    • Businesses owned by developers and landlords that do not actively use or occupy the assets acquired or improved with the loan proceeds (except when the property is leased to the business at zero profit for the property’s owners)
    • Life insurance companies
    • Businesses located in a foreign country (businesses in the U.S. owned by aliens may qualify)
    • Businesses engaged in pyramid sale distribution plans, where a participant’s primary incentive is based on the sales made by an ever-increasing number of participants
    • Businesses deriving more than one-third of gross annual revenue from legal gambling activities
    • Businesses engaged in any illegal activity
    • Private clubs and businesses that limit the number of memberships for reasons other than capacity
    • Government-owned entities
    • Businesses principally engaged in teaching, instructing, counseling or indoctrinating religion or religious beliefs, whether in a religious or secular setting
    • Consumer and marketing cooperatives (producer cooperatives are eligible)
    • Loan packagers earning more than one third of their gross annual revenue from packaging SBA loans
    • Businesses in which the lender or CDC, or any of its associates owns an equity interest
    • Businesses that present live performances of an indecent sexual nature or derive directly or indirectly more 2.5 percent of gross revenue through the sale of products or services, or the presentation of any depictions or displays, of an indecent sexual nature
    • Businesses primarily engaged in political or lobbying activities
    • Speculative businesses (such as oil exploration)

There are also eligibility factors for financial assistance based on the activities of the owners and the historical operation of the business. As such, the business cannot have been:

    • A business that caused the government to have incurred a loss related to a prior business debt
    • A business owned 20 percent or more by a person associated with a different business that caused the government to have incurred a loss related to a prior business debt
    • A business owned 20 percent or more by a person who is incarcerated, on probation, on parole, or has been indicted for a felony or a crime of moral depravity

    Special Considerations

Special considerations apply to some types of businesses and individuals, which include:

    • Franchises are eligible except when a franchiser retains power to control operations to such an extent as to equate to an employment contract; the franchisee must have the right to profit from efforts commensurate with ownership
    • Recreational facilities and clubs are eligible if the facilities are open to the general public, or in membership-only situations, membership is not selectively denied or restricted to any particular groups
    • Farms and agricultural businesses are eligible, but these applicants should first explore Farm Service Agency (FSA) programs, particularly if the applicant has a prior or existing relationship with FSA
    • Fishing vessels are eligible, but those seeking funds for the construction or reconditioning of vessels with a cargo capacity of five tons or more must first request financing from the National Marine Fisheries Service
    • Privately owned medical facilities including hospitals, clinics, emergency outpatient facilities, and medical and dental laboratories are eligible; recovery and nursing homes are also eligible, provided they are licensed by the appropriate government agency and they provide more than room and board
    • An Eligible Passive Company (EPC) must use loan proceeds to acquire or lease, and/or improve or renovate, real or personal property that it leases to one or more operating companies and must not make any profit from conducting its activities
    • Legal aliens are eligible; however, consideration is given to status (e.g. resident, lawful temporary resident) in determining the business’ degree of risk
    • Probation or parole: Applications will not be accepted from firms in which a principal is currently incarcerated, on parole, on probation or is a defendant in a criminal proceeding

10 Cool Business Ideas For Newbie Entrepreneurs

Photo: Liesha Petrovich ; Credit: Crystal Clear Photography, LLC

Ready to take a chance this year? Maybe try something a little bit different?

If your answer is yes, then it’s time to start that business you’ve always dreamed about. You don’t have to start big, or risk your life savings. You can start each of these businesses with a minimal investment, and many as a side hustle on the weekend .

So, if you’re ready to have a little more fun (and income) this year, get inspired by one of these cool business ideas .

    1. Offline education.

Online teaching is a booming business—$107 billion to be exact! That figure includes online universities, corporate training, webinars, and selling courses on platforms like Udemy and Ruzuku.

There are also a ton of courses on how to create (and profit from) online courses! But the growth of online learning hasn’t stopped the need for offline, local independent teachers.

If you have a talent and developed skill, why not teach it to an offline audience? Adult education, after-school programs, day-cares, community centers, and even churches need interesting and valuable courses for their members.

Here are a few examples: horseback riding. swimming, karate, dance, gymnastics, music, computers skills technology, golf, tennis, archery, business planning, accounting, home repair, cooking, meal planning, personal finance and so on.

    2. Sell your hobby.

Combine your hobby with a business and you’ve got a recipe for success. Businesses like, How to Cook That. are part helpful blog and part online shop. Owner Ann Reardon shares helpful tips and tricks to make amazing desserts, but also sells interesting and fun how-to’s and templates.

Using a simple widget from the e-commerce platform Selz. Ann can sell any recipe, guide or template from anywhere on her website. This can be a great niche business for anyone who wants to start an online business selling plans, guides, patterns or tutorials. You don’t even need your own website, as you can sell your digital download from your own Facebook account or Selz store.

    3. Lunch carts, food trucks and kiosks.

Starting a restaurant is one of the riskiest and capital-intensive businesses out there. There is a ton of overhead, even for the smallest diner.

On the other hand, starting a lunch truck, food cart or a kiosk has minimal startup costs. You still have to follow local regulations, but the investment is much smaller than a full-fledged restaurant.

One of the best things about food trucks is the insanely wide variety of possibilities. From a marshmallow cart to cannolis, the portable food business is here to stay. Checkout Portland Maine’s Mami Food Truck, which specializes in Japanese street food.

    4. Vending machine business.

Who would have thought the vending machine industry is worth approximately $8 billion? While the location of the vending machine is the key to success, there are many different kinds of vending machines to consider, including drink, food, toys, gumballs, stickers, games, and even personal grooming machines.

There are also variations of traditional vending machines, like those that only offer healthy vending choices and others that offer credit card payment options.

If you’ve got an entrepreneurial bug and want to try something a little different, Healthy Vending offers a smart guide on how to start a vending machine business .

    5. Reiki therapist.

Reiki therapists are at the intersection of new age and creative wellness businesses. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It’s not for everyone, but it can be a fun, interesting and rewarding business.

You have to learn the practice and check the regulations in your area, but for those with a drive to help people, Reiki can be smart and rewarding business.

    6. Herbal farm stand.

Shop local. It’s a mantra heard in every small community; and many offer farm stands year-round. There are many different niches to choose from including honey, jams, grass-fed meat, organic produce and fresh herbs.

    Photo: © dusk, YFS Magazine

Beyond using herbs for cooking, consumers are now using herbs for medicinal purposes, candles and aromatherapy essences, baths and teas. If you have a green thumb and enough of a backyard for farming, consider starting a herb farm.

It has a low startup cost and can be operated part-time. One enterprising farmer started his business using lavender that grew along his road, and sold lavender sachets. That’s about as low-cost as you can get!

    7.Freelancing.

The term freelancer is actually an umbrella term for hundreds of different businesses. It’s anyone who is outsourced to do a job, and the benefit is the employer doesn’t have to pay benefits like insurance or 401k’s.

If you have in-demand skills that can be outsourced, consider starting a freelance business. One of the best things about being a freelancer, is that you can offer your services at competitive prices.

There is always a demand for business services such as: IT, human resources, accounting, PR, customer service, marketing and sales; Writing services: resumes, cover letters, ghostwriting, articles, editing and blog posts; and Miscellaneous services: wedding/event planner, graphic artist, photographer, and interior design.

    8. Aquarium maintenance.

This business idea sounds crazy (i know) on the surface. But it’s actually a growing industry, and does great in the right market. You can cater to either homes or businesses, and you are responsible for all aspects of maintaining a healthy aquarium.

Research the licensing regulations in your area. It s a unique business idea for anyone with a passion for fish and aquatic life.

    9. Bicycle maintenance and repair.

It’s easy to assume that bike riding is for the young. But biking is actually skyrocketing, especially in city centers and local towns! Thanks to baby boomers, seniors now account for 22 percent of adult bikers. And where bikes are, bicycle repair isn’t that far behind.

Plus, it’s the type of business that anyone can start in a home garage. For example, the Green Machine Bike Shop in Norway, Maine offers bike repair, but also created group rides in their area to promote their love of biking.

    10. Ethical dog breeder.

The term puppy mill brings up horrific images of abused dogs. However, with so-called designer dogs fetching thousands per puppy, there is a growing need for ethical dog breeders.

    Photo: © bussardel, YFS Magazine

Ethical breeders keep and care for each dog as a pet, not as livestock. They view their dogs as family members, not just a means to an end. Of course this means less profits than traditional puppy mills, so most ethical breeders only keep a few dogs for breeding purposes. The pet business is part money maker and part adorable fun.

The 3 Best Online Tax Software for Small Business

Choosing the best online tax software for small businesses involves the consideration of several factors, such as the availability of tools that help you find industry-specific tax deductions. You should also look at the types of support the company provides in case you need some extra support. Some programs offer in-person assistance, live-chat services, phone support, online learning resources, or all of the above. Price is also another deciding factor. If you ve filed small-business taxes before, you probably want to look for a software program that allows you to import your previous year s information. The three companies listed here represent some of the best online tax software for small businesses on the market today.

TurboTax is well suited for the self employed or small-business owner, offering two distinct online tax software packages designed specifically for these individuals. If you use QuickBooks, you can quickly import all your income and expense information and TurboTax will add them to the appropriate categories. There are also tools in place to help you find industry-specific deductions and track your audit risk. If your business is new, TurboTax will show you which startup costs can be deducted, and if you ve been around for a while, you ll be able to import all of your tax information from previous years. TurboTax s interface is very user friendly, so you shouldn t have any trouble navigating your way through the different categories. However, experts are available to help if you have any questions.

H R Block is another great online tax software for small businesses. They support most tax forms and guarantee their calculations are accurate, so you can be sure you ll get your maximum tax refund. Helpful section overviews and resource links will ensure you understand the entire tax process and will save you valuable time spent searching for information elsewhere. One great thing about H R Block is that they have retail locations everywhere, so if you need help with your taxes, you can always stop in and get help from a real person. Their Premium plan includes five free federal e-files, which is beneficial if you have to file taxes for multiple businesses. In the unlikely event that you do get audited, H R Block will provide you with free audit support and representation to help make the whole process as painless as possible.

If you have to file small-business taxes, Jackson Hewitt is another company worth considering because they offer a Premium package for small-business owners at a very affordable price. You ll obtain access to their Help Me Decide guides, which are especially useful if you re new to filing taxes, and excellent deduction discovery tools to help find every possible qualifying deduction, including those that are occupation specific. When you purchase online tax software from Jackson Hewitt, you re also entitled to unlimited support from Jackson Hewitt tax professionals. You can contact them by phone, email, or live chat and visit one of their retail locations if you prefer to get support in person. Jackson Hewitt also offers personal audit assistance in the unfortunate event that you do get audited.

What You Need to Know About Stock Markets Today

By Anne Kates Smith | October 2010

Thanks to electronic trading, the stock market is wilder than ever.

Editor’s Note: We are re-featuring this guide to understanding the markets in light of the announcement on February 15 that the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange has agreed to merge with Deutsche Boerse. The merger would create the world’s largest operator of financial markets. Deutsche Boerse shareholders would own 60% of the merged company; NYSE Euronext shareholders, 40%. The text below has been updated since publication in the October 2010 issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance and the data is as of February 16, 2011.

    1. There’s no “there” there. You may picture a bustling exchange, where commerce begins and ends with the clang of a bell. But the “stock market” is an increasingly fragmented collection of more than 50 trading platforms, almost all electronic, with various protocols, rules and oversight.

    2. The Big Board has shrunk. Images of the New York Stock Exchange still dominate business-news broadcasts. But, in fact, just 34% of the trading volume in stocks listed on the NYSE actually occurs on the exchange, down from 79% in 2005. Nasdaq, the first electronic exchange, accounts for about one-fifth of all U.S. stock trading. Newer exchanges, such as Direct Edge, in Jersey City, N.J. and BATS Exchange, in Kansas City, Mo. each account for about 10% of trading volume. About 30% of U.S. trading volume takes place off exchanges.

    3. ECNs are the new matchmakers. Electronic communication networks match up buy and sell orders at specified prices for institutional investors and brokers. This is where “after-hours” trading occurs. In addition, hundreds of broker-dealers execute trades internally, filling orders out of their own inventory.

    4. Some trades are shrouded in mystery. You’ve heard of dark stars. Now there are dark pools — private networks, sponsored by securities firms, where professionals trade without displaying price quotes to the public beforehand. Such dark pools account for more than 10% of stock-trading volume. The Securities and Exchange Commission wants to make dark pools more transparent to avoid a two-tier market that denies the public important pricing information.

    5. You’re sure to get the best price — most days. According to an SEC rule, your trade is supposed to be routed to the platform with the best price at that moment. But when some venues aren’t functioning as normal, exchanges may override the rule. The rule didn’t apply during the “flash crash” of May 2010, when an intentional slowdown on the NYSE caused orders to be routed elsewhere, at lower prices.

    6. There are fewer traffic cops. In the old days, specialists and market makers kept markets liquid by stepping up to buy — or sell — when a stampede of investors headed the other way. Now, not all exchanges require market makers. High-frequency traders, who program computers to profit from minute price discrepancies and can execute trades in milliseconds, were supposed to fill the void. But they don’t have to, despite the fact that they often account for 50% or more of total trading volume.

    7. Stoplights are coming. A pilot plan, recently extended until April, calls for stock-by-stock circuit breakers that would be applicable across all trading platforms. The plan currently applies to stocks in Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index, the Russell 1000 index and certain exchange-traded funds, and calls for a trading pause if the share price changes by 10% within a five-minute period. Since December, market makers in exchange-listed securities have been required to maintain continuous buy and sell quotes within a certain range of a security’s most recent share price, putting an end to occasionally ridiculous quotes, far removed from prevailing prices, that were never meant to be executed.

Learn about the definition of – and qualifications for – a small business and why it’s important to know your status.

SBA has established numerical definitions of small businesses, or “size standards,” for all for-profit industries. Size standards represent the largest size that a business (including its subsidiaries and affiliates) may be to remain classified as a small business concern. In determining what constitutes a small business, the definition will vary to reflect industry differences. These size standards are used to determine eligibility for SBA’s financial assistance and to its other programs, as well as to Federal government procurement programs designed to help small businesses. Also, the Small Business Act states that unless specifically authorized by statute, no other Federal department or agency may prescribe a size standard for categorizing a business concern as a small business concern, unless such proposed size standard meets certain criteria and is approved by the Administrator of SBA.

What Is Business Environment? – Definition & Factors

Businesses do not operate in a vacuum; they operate in an environment. In this lesson, you’ll learn about the business environment, including what makes it up. A short quiz follows the lesson.

    Business Environment Defined

Business environment is the sum total of all external and internal factors that influence a business. You should keep in mind that external factors and internal factors can influence each other and work together to affect a business. For example, a health and safety regulation is an external factor that influences the internal environment of business operations. Additionally, some external factors are beyond your control. These factors are often called external constraints. Let’s take a look at some key environmental factors.

    External Factors

Political factors are governmental activities and political conditions that may affect your business. Examples include laws, regulations, tariffs and other trade barriers, war, and social unrest.

Macroeconomic factors are factors that affect the entire economy, not just your business. Examples include things like interest rates, unemployment rates, currency exchange rates, consumer confidence, consumer discretionary income, consumer savings rates, recessions, and depressions.

Microeconomic factors are factors that can affect your business, such as market size, demand, supply, relationships with suppliers and your distribution chain, such as retail stores that sell your products, and the number and strength of your competition.

Social factors are basically sociological factors related to general society and social relations that affect your business. Social factors include social movements, such as environmental movements, as well as changes in fashion and consumer preferences. For example, clothing fashions change with the season, and there is a current trend towards green construction and organic foods.

Technological factors are technological innovations that can either benefit or hurt your business. Some technological innovations can increase your productivity and profit margins, such as computer software and automated production. On the other hand, some technological innovations pose an existential threat to a business, such as Internet streaming challenging the DVD rental business.

    Internal Factors

Organizational culture is the framework of values, vision, norms, and customs shared by the members of an organization. Your business culture affects how the employees in your business interact with each other, its customers, and other stakeholders.

Organizational structure is the manner in which the business is organized to conduct its activities. Organizations can be organized fairly flat, with very few levels of hierarchy, or organized very vertical, with many levels of hierarchy. The manner in which an organization is structured will affect how your business is managed and how much control individual employees have over their work.

Management structure is the manner in which your business is managed. Management may be centralized, where all decision-making is made at the top and filtered down throughout the business, or it may be decentralized, where the decision-making is distributed throughout the organization and decisions are made closer to the relevant work activities or problems.

    Lesson Summary

Business environment includes the external and internal factors that influence a business. External factors include political factors, macroeconomic factors, microeconomic factors, social factors, and technological factors. Internal factors are factors from inside the organization that affect a business, such as organizational culture, organizational structure, and management structure.

How One Woman Built A Multimillion-Dollar Cupcake Business With Just $33 To Her Name

Gigi Butler was a cleaning lady with just $33 to her name when she opened her first cupcake shop in Nashville, Tennessee, almost seven years ago.

“People thought I was crazy, and they laughed at the idea,” she told Business Insider. “But I just had this feeling that I had to do it.”

After securing a location, whipping up a few recipes, and hiring two employees off the street, Butler opened the doors of Gigi’s Cupcakes on February 21, 2008.

“I had no investors and literally not a cent to spend on advertising,” she says. “So I just hoped and prayed people would come.”

Today there are 92 Gigi’s Cupcakes locations in 23 states, and this year she expects $35 million in annual sales across all stores. I t’s safe to say Butler’s bank account balance is no longer in the double-digits.

“I’m so happy with how things have turned out, but I never thought my success would stem from cupcakes,” she tells us. “I always thought it would be music.”

Butler was born in Oklahoma and grew up on a farm in a small desert town in California, about an hour outside of Los Angeles. Since age 7, she dreamed of becoming a country singer. “Nothing else was even an option. I was going to be a country star, end of story,” she says.

But at 15 she needed a job, and she really wasn’t interested in working for anyone else. “I decided to buy some mops and buckets, and I went from door to door, ringing doorbells, offering to clean people’s homes.”

That’s how Gigi’s Cleaning Company was born.

She cleaned homes, offices, and construction sites (and sang in a band on the side) in California for five years before deciding she was ready to take the next step in her music career.

So, in 1994, she dropped out of college and moved to Nashville with $500, no job, no friends, and no place to live.

“When I got there, I continued cleaning. So I’d do that all day, then come home and nap, then I’d go sing at bars at night until 3 a.m. – and do it all over again the next day,” she says. “But when I turned 31, I got tired of getting my butt pinched and passing the tip jar around. I felt like I was failing since my dream was to sing. But I knew it just wasn’t working anymore.”

After giving up her dream of becoming a country star in 2005, Butler focused on building her cleaning business in Nashville.

“I was making pretty good money and learning how to be a boss, manage a team, and run a business, all without having to be in the corporate world, which was great since I never really wanted to sit in front of a computer screen in high heels, pantyhose, and a skirt,” she says.

Though content, Butler said she knew she wasn’t being challenged enough, “and something was still missing.”

In 2007, while cleaning a bathroom in a client’s home, Butler got a call from her brother.

“He was in New York for Labor Day Weekend and said, ‘You won’t believe this, but people are waiting in line for hours for cupcakes. And they’re not even as good as yours.”

Butler grew up surrounded by bakers. Her aunts, grandmothers, and mother were all talented in the kitchen – and she “inherited the gene.”

“It’s in my blood, but I never thought about pursuing it as a career or a business.”

She hung up the phone and looked at herself in the mirror and thought, I’m not afraid to fail, so I’m going to do this. I am going to open a cupcake shop.

A month later she was in Texas visiting her great aunt Bennie who owned a bakery. “I had no idea what I was doing, so I went there to learn.”

When she got back to Tennessee, she went to the bank to ask for a loan. “I had great credit and no debt, but they literally laughed in my face and said, ‘Seriously? A cupcake shop?'”

So, instead, she took $100,000 in cash advance loans from her credit cards.

After finding a location for the store – which she refers to as “the sweet spot,” since it’s near three universities, six hospitals, and right off Music Row – Butler’s parents came out to help her launch her new business. “My mom helped me develop recipes, and my dad did the store design. They also gave me some money, which I really needed.”

Before opening the shop, Butler used up all of the $100,000 in loans, plus the money her parents gifted her, and all of her savings – and she still had $6,500 in bills to pay ($4,500 in rent; $1,000 for ingredients; and $1,000 for her first two employees). She had just $33 in her bank account.

“I literally cleaned three houses the day before we opened the store to pay the plumber,” she says. “And then that same day, my contractor came in with a $15,000 dry wall bill he ‘forgot’ to give me. I literally fell to the floor and had a melt down.”

Butler had exactly one week to pay the $6,500 to her landlord, food supplier, and two employees – and told the contractor she’d need some time to pay off his bill.

“I didn’t know how I was going to do it,” she tells Business Insider. “I remember looking up, saying, ‘Please, just let the people come. Make them like my cupcakes. They have to like my cupcakes.'”

They didn’t like them; they loved them, she says.

Butler recalls an encounter with one customer that first week. “I was walking around greeting people, and one woman said, ‘I’m going to order a Scarlett’s Red Velvet flavor cupcake.’ So I told her we didn’t have that particular flavor that day, and she started screaming at me, ‘I’ve been waiting in line for that cupcake! You’re telling me you don’t have it. Are you some kind of idiot ?’ And you’d think I’d be offended, but I walked away and thought to myself, ‘Oh my god, people are yelling over my cupcakes because they want them! Cha-ching!'”

By March 1, 2008, a week after opening, Butler was able to pay off the $6,500 in bills. “And I still had $300 left,” she says proudly.

A few months later, Butler’s landlord, Alan Thompson, suggested she franchise her concept. “I said, ‘What’s franchising?'”

So together with Thompson, her parents, and her brother Randall, who was eventually appointed as chief operating officer of the company, Butler began franchising the Gigi’s Cupcakes brand in November 2008.

“I thought I’d open one shop and make $50,000 a year, and that’s it,” she says. “In fact, I didn’t even stop cleaning until I had 15 franchises.”

Today, 90 of the 92 Gigi’s Cupcakes stores are owned by franchisees.

She believes her brand has had so much success because the products – cupcakes, cookies, muffins, cakes, pies, and other baked goods – are “delicious and unique. Each flavor has a story,” she explains.

The other reason: “I was never afraid to fail, so I gave it my all.”

Butler, a single mom to her 3-year-old daughter, says her biggest challenge has been accepting the fact that she “no longer wears all the hats.”

“At the beginning, I did a little bit of everything. I’d be whipping up a batch of frosting, then have to run to a meeting, and then do paperwork. Now we have a great team to do all of those jobs, and my role is to be the face of the brand. But I still want to be everywhere, all at once, making sure everything is perfect, because this business is my baby – it has my name on it.”

Butler says she plans to grow the business to 250 stores by 2019.

“But no matter how big we get, I’ll always make time to put on my apron and whip up a batch of frosting, because that’s what I love to do.”

Why would I want an ATM
    business?

Do you want a business that can net well over $100,000 a year, which requires less than an hour a month of your time? I can guarantee you answered yes! With an ATM business, you need no employees or a storefront. It requires a very low start up cost. Your
investment into the ATM machine can be paid back in less than six months. You
can manage your ATM business from home at your own schedule. You may only have
to go to the location of the ATM machine once or twice a month depending on
usage and amount of money stocked in the machine! You can also own an ATM
business, while still working a part-time or full-time job since it requires so
    little time!

How do I start my own ATM business?

The ATM business is a very profitable and easy business to get into! Your first and most important step is to find the locations to place the machine. Many people ask, do I have
to own the business to place an ATM machine there? You do not! All you have to
do is approach the business owner and see if they re interested in having an ATM
machine inside their business. Some reasons why a business owner would like a
machine in their business is to lower their credit card costs, see more cash
being spent, as well as to attract customers into their business just by having
an ATM machine on premises. They have no responsibly of the ATM, yet get to
reap all of the benefits! With credit card costs being so high, most business
owners would rather see cash being spent. By having an ATM machine on premises,
they will see cash being spent rather than having to take plastic! Therefore,
they will see lower credit card costs and more cash spending! Once you find the
location on where to place the ATM machine, you purchase the machine. All
Around ATM will come out, install the machine, program it, and train you on how
to work the ATM. You are responsible for stocking your cash inside the ATM
machine, and you keep 100% of all the surcharge revenue profits. You get to
select your surcharge amount. You get to select what you d like displayed on
the screen, as well as what you d like to print on the receipt. You can use
this as an advertisement for your ATM company, or you can advertise the
business that the ATM is placed in. You can even sell this advertisement space!
All Around ATM will set you up with a website where you can monitor your ATM,
so you can see exactly what is happening on your machine IN REAL TIME! As soon
as the machine is installed, you start making money! You can make well over
$100,000 a year on 10 machines. These machines require very little time. On
average, depending on how many times a month you fill the machine, you only
will be spending about 10 minutes in total at the machine. It takes as little
as three minutes to load the machine with cash. It s all very simple, and you
can be making more money working a few hours a year, than most people making
    working full time!

What are my start up costs for getting into the ATM business?

You can get started into the ATM business for a very low cost. For as little as $1,599, you can purchase your first machine. You can stock the machine with as little as $500 or as much
as $16,000+. Most customers stock their ATM machines with between $1,000-3,000.
Therefore, you can get started with your first ATM machine for under $3,000.
THERE ARE NO FRANCHISE FEES! You can pay off your ATM machine in the first
three months or less, and everything from then on is a profit. ATM machines can
last as long as 7-8 years or more, allowing you to be collecting money off of
the ATM for many years. At All Around ATM we suggest you start with one or two
machines, and build your ATM business up from there. You can gain a good
understanding of the ATM machines and how they work, and then expand your
business! We have many customers who started with only one ATM machine, and now
have well over 100 machines out in the field!

What types of locations do well with an ATM machine and do you find the location?

All different types of locations do well with an ATM machine, but the most important thing comes down to volume! Businesses that often do well with ATM machines are con stores,
restaurants, night clubs, bars, malls, etc. However, the main thing to look at
when trying to find a good location to place the ATM machine is the amount of
people walking into the business daily. Any type of business that is busy will
do well with an ATM machine. The more people walking through a business, the
more usage the ATM machine will get. As far as the location, you are responsible
for finding it. However, we do have a unique program at All Around ATM. We get
tons of inquires a day for businesses looking for a free placement of an ATM
machine. Often times, the business doesn t qualify for a free placement of the
ATM because the location is out of our service area and the armored carrier
costs are just too high. What we do is we match you up with any business
inquires in your area, allowing you to decide if you want to place an ATM
machine inside their location! We always will pass long these free placements to
you, all FREE OF COST! At All Around ATM, we re always looking to help out our
customers and give them new locations.
