IBM – United States, new business ideas.#New #business #ideas

IBM builds a smarter planet

Amid the global economic crisis of 2008, IBM began a conversation with the world about the promise of a smarter planet and a new strategic agenda for progress and growth.

As the internet grew, so did technology-driven enterprise needs and a truly global workforce. Computational power was being infused into things no one had thought of as computers: phones, cars, roads, power lines, waterways and food crates. A trillion connected and intelligent things were becoming a system of systems — an internet of things — and producing oceans of raw data.

Let’s seize this opportunity to create more and better jobs, cultivate valuable skills, and not simply repair but prepare our economy for the 21st century.

Sam Palmisano, IBM CEO and chairman, 2009

New business ideas

Making sense of a sensored world

IBM introduced its Smarter Planet vision with an award-winning 1 marketing campaign designed to explain how a whole new generation of intelligent systems and technologies — more powerful and accessible than ever before — could be put to use for profound impact and to encourage further thinking. Smarter power grids, smarter food systems, smarter water, smarter healthcare, smarter traffic systems. And sophisticated analytics and algorithms that could make sense of it all.

Forward-thinking leaders and citizens around the world began to consider innovative ideas such as traveler-centric transportation, consumer-centric electric power and intelligent systems for managing healthcare, water, public safety and food. Within a year of the Smarter Planet initiative s launch, hundreds of IBM clients had seized on new capabilities to build smarter systems, and began achieving measurable benefits for their companies and communities. 2

Building on a smarter planet

Six years and thousands of clients after the Smarter Planet debut, IBM showcased its progress in a 2014 campaign, Made With IBM. The campaign showed IBM as an essential partner in providing technology building blocks for the new world at work — data, cloud, mobile, social and security.

In 2015 the Outthink campaign promoted the concept of cognitive business, with IBM Watson at its center. Smarter Planet had shown us an intelligent, instrumented and interconnected world. The Cognitive Era advances that idea using analytics, natural language processing and machine learning. The goal is systems that can understand, reason and learn; as IBM CEO Ginni Rometty explains, to redefine the relationship between man and machine.

Business – definition of business by The Free Dictionary, small scale business.#Small #scale #business

business

These nouns apply to forms of activity that have the objective of supplying products or services for a fee. Business pertains broadly to commercial, financial, and industrial activity, and more narrowly to specific fields or firms engaging in this activity: a company that does business over the internet; went into the software consulting business; owns a dry-cleaning business. Industry entails the production and manufacture of goods or commodities, especially on a large scale: the computer industry. Commerce and trade refer to the exchange and distribution of goods or commodities: laws regulating interstate commerce; involved in the domestic fur trade. Traffic pertains in particular to businesses engaged in the transportation of goods or passengers: renovated the docks to attract shipping traffic. The word may also suggest illegal trade: discovered a brisk traffic in stolen goods.

busi ness

Business

  1. As oxygen is the disintegrating principle of life, working night and day to dissolve, separate, pull apart and dissipate, so there is something in business that continually tends to scatter, destroy and shift possession from this man to that. A million mice nibble eternally at every business venture Elbert Hubbard
  2. Business is like a man rowing a boat upstream. He has no choice; he must go ahead or he will go back Lewis E. Pierson
  3. Business is like oil. It won t mix with anything but business J. Grahame
  4. Business is very much like religion: it is founded on faith William McFee
  5. Business policy flows downhill from the mountain, like water Anon
  6. A business without customers is like a computer without bytes Anon

As the entries that follow show, this concept lends itself to many additional twists.

Playwrights Ernst and Lindley wrote this simile to be spoken by a judge in their 1930 s play Hold Your Tongue.

The first two words are transposed from Computer companies to generalize the comparison.

business

Business is the work of making, buying, and selling goods or services.

When you use business in this sense, don’t say ‘a business’. Don’t say, for example, ‘ We’ve got a business to do ‘. You say ‘We’ve got some business to do’.

You can talk about a particular area of business using the followed by a noun followed by business.

A business is a company, shop, or organization that makes and sells goods or provides a service.

The Top 10 Small Business – Entrepreneur Blogs of 2013, business blogs.#Business #blogs

The Top 10 Small Business Entrepreneur Blogs of 2013

Business blogsAs a small business owner myself, I know how important it is to stay up-to-date with the ever changing trends that the business world throws at us.

I watch very little TV and I don t read the newspapers. I rely entirely on the internet, and my iPad to stay up to date with whats going on in the world. When I want to focus on business, and the developments that affect me as a small business owner myself, I turn to blogs. Bloggers have the ability to express themselves in somewhat real time . They can keep their content fresh, and their opinions can be heard quickly.

However, in the world of business blogs there is a lot of noise. A lot of people are trying to get your attention, and with only so many minutes a day to devote to learning and consuming content (personally, I put aside around 30-45 minutes daily), you ve got to be very strict with who s content you make time for.

This is the reason why I ve put this list together. This is not about online business, or online marketing. That s another list entirely. This collection of blogs are my personal favorite / go-to people in the world of small business blogging. Individually they strike a chord with me enough to keep me coming back for more over and over again.

Note: These blogs are listed in no particular order of preference, or influence.

1. Guy Kawasaki s How to Change the World

I like guy s writing. I like his opinions. But, most of all, I like his style. This guy just delivers over and over again. His skill level when it comes to giving people what they need and want (sometimes without even knowing it, is what keeps me glued to his stuff. My only wish is that he d blog more often!

2. Seth Godin s Blog

Seth Godin is an all-star marketer and author. He s one of those people that puts out so much amazingly helpful, insightful and motivational content that it s hard to keep up with him. His books, coupled together with his blog have been a regular part of my business information diet for years.

3. James Altucher s The Altucher Confidential

I ve only just recently discovered James, and I ve been kicking myself since (while enjoying his stuff) for not finding him sooner. His opinions are smart, savvy and above all memorable. His writing is just enough , even though some of of his posts can be seen as a little long for some people. Loving me a little Altucher at the moment!

4. Danny Brown s Blog

Danny is one of the very few non-American (he s from Scotland originally) bloggers, authors, speakers and thought leaders genuinely crushing it online today. His stuff is simply brilliant. Seriously, I ve been reading and watching Danny for years and he never fails to deliver. Yet to meet him hope that changes soon.

5. Tim Ferriss Experiments in Lifestyle Design

Almost every entrepreneur I come into contact with today knows Tim Ferriss. His 4-Hour Work Week book is essential reading for every small business owner out there, and his blog should be on that list, too. Although recently he s focused more on the health and diet / lifestyle side of things, just watching Tim market his stuff is a lesson in itself.

6. Chris Brogan s Blog

Chris is a top guy. He really knows the social web, and he knows marketing better than most. He blogs practically every day, on a plethora of topics, but is mostly known for his small business marketing and growth advice. Not just a great blogger, Chris has also written countless books which should all be devoured!

7. Derek Halpern s Social Triggers

Derek is as rough around the edges as he is as pretty to watch on video! He s a sharp, straight shooting marketing and biz whiz. Combine phycology, sales and overall business savviness and you ve got the brilliance that is his blog and podcast. You can always expect nothing but high protein from Derek. No fluff. Ever.

8. John Jantsch s Duct Tape Marketing

John and his team put out some of the best marketing know-how content online. It s his straight forward, easy to understand and digest format that attracts the hoards of fans that he has to his blog, books and podcast on a regular basis. When it comes to all-out hard core marketing advice, there aren t that many that compare to John.

9. Peter Shankman s Blog

I ve been a big Peter Shankman fan for years. When I saw him keynote at BlogWorld in LA a few years back he made me laugh and cry (literally) and laugh again within 30mins! He is as smart as they come, and super approachable to boot. We ve become buddies, but I don t say these things because of that. I strongly believe he is ahead of the curve, compared to many other thought leaders out there.

10. Anita Campbell s Small Business Trends

And finally, but by no means least, Anita s blog and overall small biz brand. Not only is the content on this blog some of the best out there, when it comes to serious small business advice, but the sheer volume of whats available is nothing short of impressive. Anita is lovely, and her team is excellent at keeping things really fresh and up-to-date. This should be bookmarked. Plain and simple.

As the title will no doubt explain, these are MY top ten choices when it comes to regular reading online. What are yours?

BONUS My New Business Blog Podcast (Added November 19, 2013)

Sorry, but I had to add this on the list too many people have suggested I do it, so I ve pulled the trigger. I love blogging and helping everyone that visits this site (regularly, or just as one-off visitors) in whatever way possible. If there s a piece of content I ve not created that you d like to see from me, please let me know by commenting below, or tweeting me.

Share your fave s in the comment section below, and feel free to include a link to YOUR blog, too (if you re blogging not just marketing!) I d love to check it out!

Start up business

Imagine a life where all your time is spent on the things you want to do.

Imagine handing a letter to your boss that reads, “Dear Boss, I’m writing to let you know that your services are no longer required. Thanks for everything, but I’ll be doing things my own way now.”

Imagine that today is your final day of working for anyone other than yourself. What if—very soon, not in some distant, undefined future—you prepare for work by firing up a laptop in your home office, walking into a storefront you’ve opened, phoning a client who trusts you for helpful advice, or otherwise doing what you want instead of what someone tells you to do?

All over the world, and in many different ways, thousands of people are doing exactly that. They are rewriting the rules of work, becoming their own bosses, and creating a new future.

Start up business

In The $100 Startup, Chris Guillebeau shows you how to lead a life of adventure, meaning and purpose — and earn a good living.

Still in his early thirties, Chris is on the verge of completing a tour of every country on earth — he s already visited more than 175 nations — and yet he s never held a real job or earned a regular paycheck. Rather, he has a special genius for turning ideas into income, and he uses what he earns both to support his life of adventure and to give back.

There are many others like Chris — those who ve found ways to opt out of traditional employment and create the time and income to pursue what they find meaningful. Sometimes, achieving that perfect blend of passion and income doesn t depend on shelving what you currently do. You can start small with your venture, committing little time or money, and wait to take the real plunge when you re sure it s successful.

In preparing to write this book, Chris identified 1,500 individuals who have built businesses earning $50,000 or more from a modest investment (in many cases, $100 or less), and from that group he s chosen to focus on the 50 most intriguing case studies. In nearly all cases, people with no special skills discovered aspects of their personal passions that could be monetized, and were able to restructure their lives in ways that gave them greater freedom and fulfillment.

Here, finally, distilled into one easy-to-use guide, are the most valuable lessons from those who ve learned how to turn what they do into a gateway to self-fulfillment. It s all about finding the intersection between your expertise — even if you don t consider it such — and what other people will pay for.

You don t need an MBA, a business plan or even employees. All you need is a product or service that springs from what you love to do anyway, people willing to pay, and a way to get paid

Not content to talk in generalities, Chris tells you exactly how many dollars his group of unexpected entrepreneurs required to get their projects up and running; what these individuals did in the first weeks and months to generate significant cash; some of the key mistakes they made along the way, and the crucial insights that made the business stick. Among Chris s key principles: if you re good at one thing, you re probably good at something else; never teach a man to fish — sell him the fish instead; and in the battle between planning and action, action wins.

In ancient times, people who were dissatisfied with their lives dreamed of finding magic lamps, buried treasure, or streets paved with gold. Today, we know that it s up to us to change our lives. And the best part is, if we change our own life, we can help others change theirs. This remarkable book will start you on your way.

Fashion-Related Business Ideas, startup business ideas.#Startup #business #ideas

7 Business Ideas for Fashion Fanatics

When you tell people that you want to work in fashion, you probably get a snarky reaction or a sympathetic nod. However, your passion is unwavering, so you keep your head high and heels higher.

Making a name in the industry isn t simple, but you don t have to be a model or designer to succeed. Here are seven business opportunities for fashion fanatics.

Fashion event producer

Running a fashion show isn t easy. Fashion event producers work with designers and models, sometimes even coaching them.

You would help the designer with runway show casting and have an understanding of how clothes should be portrayed on the body and how the models should carry themselves, said Kerry Bannigan, founder of Nolcha, a New York-based fashion event production company.

While startup costs are minimal you won t need employees or even an office you will need to do some heavy self-promotion. Relationships and referrals are key for this type of work, Bannigan said. Business cards, a user-friendly website showing an online portfolio and a printed portfoilio are a must. Networking through industry websites is also essential, she said.

Before you embark on this career, you should understand fashion shows, work with creative people and be flexible enough to deal with diverse personalities, Bannigan said. Income potential is based on the number of clients you have and how big they are.

Fashion business coach

This business is ideal for someone with a corporate background who wants to make a move into fashion. A fashion business coach helps guide design firms in running their business, from growth plans to everyday tasks such as invoice collection and bookkeeping. It also can involve coaching the creative designer on how to perform and interact in different business settings, Bannigan said.

Startup costs for a fashion coaching business are minimal, but earning potential is significant, said Bannigan: Research consultancy services with established businesses can make six-figure salaries with constant clientele.

Fashion blogger

Some of today s most influential fashion websites like the Sartorialist and Racked debuted as small fashion blogs. They ve since come into their own as industry thought leaders, and they sell lots of advertising.

Fashion blogs don t require large investments, as website development and hosting can be quite inexpensive but they do require lots of legwork. Whether you re stalking the city streets in search of fashionable photo ops or following the moves of leading designers, you ll need to be tracking changing trends at every moment.

On the plus side, a fashion blog can be a complement to your existing job, said Angie Wojak, director of career services at the School of Visual Arts.

You can start a blog on your own while looking for job, and it doesn t take a big outlay of cash, Wojak said. [Want to make money from your blog? Here s how to do it.]

Photo stylist

Photo stylists work with photographers to scout shoot locations, get clothing to shoots, buy furniture and accessories and make sure the photo shoot goes as planned. It requires a good sense of fashion, an understanding of fashion history and the smarts to know where to source your products, according to Sara Petitt, coordinator of the fabric styling program at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Successful photo stylists can come from any background. They usually make their mark by doing a good job and gaining business through word of mouth. Photo stylists can be paid hourly or by the project.

Fashion public relations rep

Do you love to talk your favorite designer brands up to friends and family? Are you always searching for the latest fashion news and sample sales? If so, you might consider starting your own fashion public relations business. Fashion PR is a difficult field to break into, but with the right skill set and connections, you can help designers and other fashion businesses get noticed by the media and fashionistas.

In an article on PR Couture, entrepreneur Jonathan Leger writes that there are several key components to success as a fashion PR professional. You must create a strong brand for your clients to differentiate them from other designers, know how to work with fashion editors to get magazine placements and with models and celebrities to get your clients work in the public eye, have a keen understanding of media trends and can prove the value of your work.

As with any PR job, Leger noted that fashion publicists must be ready to put out fires and handle any crises that arise from unhappy clients, models or editors.

Personal stylist

You d be surprised at the number of people willing to pay someone a good price to scour their closet and replace dreary clothing with stylish items. You can run your own personal shopping service and revamp your clients entire wardrobe while getting paid by the hour.

As a fashionista, this job will keep you inspired as you help those who are unsatisfied with their own fashion sense. Using your passions and knowledge in the industry, you can help someone go from drab to fab. Depending on how much you promote your service, which is the best investment for your endeavor, you can earn enough to rely solely on this business.

Fashion illustrator

If you re artistic as well as fashionable, you may find success as a fashion illustrator. Using pastels, pencils, oils, paints, markers and even computers, you can create sketches to express designs and ideas.

As an illustrator, you can work strictly for a designer/fashion company or freelance, working with high end clients from home or at a studio. You can also sell your illustrations yourself or through a third party. You should invest in the best material for your sketches and have a strong social media presence to promote your content.

    One Page Business Plan Template

If you have a business idea or you are a serial entrepreneur with new endeavor in mind then a business plan is a document that you should not forget to prepare. But in order to speed up the venture design process here we have a business plan template that you can download for free and use.

    Business plan templates

The good thing about this business plan is it only contains one page business plan template, which is convenient to focus in an idea in a single page and be concise enough answering the core concepts of your venture. This is the kind of documents that VCs and Angel Investors look for to evaluate new business ideas.

Chris Guillebeau from The $100 Startup published a free One Page Business Plan in PDF document that you can download for free to get your business started sooner than later.

The main concept in this one page business plan template is that you should be able to answer in 1 line or 2 (as much) about what you are selling, what will be your customers and how much you will charge them for your product.

Alternatively, there are other business plan templates and approaches that you can follow to detail your business idea in a document. In particular, the canvas business plan idea can be useful for entrepreneurs. Lean Canvas is a free tool that helps you to create your business plan in one page canvas for your Lean Startup.

    Service business ideas

How to Build a Wealthy Income ATM Business, atm business.#Atm #business

How to Build a Wealthy Income ATM Business

ATM Operators build wealthy income ATM businesses in several ways. If you own and operate ATM’s and process with us you make money from the surcharge fee and the interbank interchange. ATM Depot also provides additional income opportunities for ATM Deployers in the form of on screen graphics creation for advertising opportunities, customized ATM wraps for branding and advertising, help with parts and service, as well as the ability to offer cash loading services (aka vaulting service). We also offer a free press release service to announce your locations and help your customer awareness.

How do you build passive income and wealth with ATM Machines?

ATM Depot Customers make money from their ATM business in several ways.

    • ATM Owners and Operators can charge their ATM customers (ATM cardholders) a surcharge fee for using their ATM. You re able to charge this fee because as the owner or operator of an ATM Machine you are providing a convenient service that offers individuals the opportunity to save time if they need to access money from their bank without the hassle of going to their own bank or ATM. ATM Depot customers set their own surcharge fee during the setup process and receive up to 110% of this fee. That’s right, we said up to 110% (that’s one hundred and ten percent) of the fee you charge.*
    • Banks that issue ATM cards (called issuers) also have to pay a small fee to the ATM networks (like Visa Plus network or MasterCard Cirrus Network ) for connecting their ATM cardholders to their corresponding bank. This is called interchange. So the way ATM Depot can offer customers up to 110% of their surcharge is by sharing some of this interchange. The interchange varies by network and all the fees for operating the ATM business come out of this fee. ATM Depot takes a few of the pennies that are left over and then shares them with their customers based on type of location and number of transactions. The additional fee ATM Depot customers earn is typically $0.05 to $0.15 over their surcharge.
    • If you are a store owner, ATM Depot offers a free Video Press Release with each ATM machine purchased, placed or reprogrammed so you also benefit from the additional traffic to your store as well as when customers withdraw funds they typically spend more in the store.

ATMDepot.com does not charge any fees to operate an ATM.

All the income generated by the ATM is kept by the ATM owner.

The ATM Owner decides who shares in the revenue and completes a payee form for ATM Depot. ATM Depot s processing center distributes the surcharge revenue share according to the ATM owners instructions.

An ATM owner can sometimes be referred to as the ATM Operator. Sometimes one individual, a group of individuals, or a company can own the actual ATM and someone else can operate the ATM. Meaning load it with cash (this would be the vaulter), handle any service issues (albeit rare), do the account balancing and operate the business.

Remember, it costs you nothing to process ATM transactions with ATMDepot. There are no hidden charges. We can also pay up to 5 different people involved with your ATM business. The ATM Owner, Cash Loader (vaulter), Investor, Retailer or location, etc. Call us or Sign up now to find out all the benefits of working with ATM Depot.

14 Free Cleaning Flyer Templates House or Business, business flyer templates.#Business #flyer #templates

    Free Cleaning Flyers

Years ago, cleaning flyers were created from scratch. Now, you can make an attractive, attention-grabbing flyer quickly and efficiently using a template. Flyers are a simple and inexpensive way to effectively market your cleaning business. In our flyer design templates, the prep work is already done for you, leaving you more time to focus on your cleaning service.

    Know Your Customers

To get the best results from your cleaning flyer marketing campaign, make sure you first know what motivates your potential customers.

Are they busy executives? Students? Managers? Single moms?

Why would they need your help? Is it because they don t have time to clean? Maybe they don t like cleaning, and can afford to hire help?

Knowing your target audience will help you choose the right flyer design and the right wording to get the most from your advertising.

For example, if you are targeting a conservative neighborhood with an older population, you may want to opt for a flyer with traditional fonts (New Century, Helvetica), and a straightforward design.

If your target is a college town, you may want to use colors and flashy typeface, or find a way to add humor in the text.

You can even try two different designs and see which flyer generates more leads.

    Successful Cleaning Flyer Designs

Don t assume that using a template will produce a boring flyer. A good template provides a basic format that can be changed to fit you and your target audience perfectly.

The variables go beyond just colors and fonts. You should also experiment with placement of text and images, to draw the reader’s eye to the most important element in your flyer. That element might be contact information, service description, or anything else, depending on your audience and your goals.

Regardless of the final design of your cleaning flyers, you will want to include the following:

    • Headline: You only have a few seconds to get people’s attention. Make sure to sum up your flyer in one short phrase or sentence. The headline should give readers an idea of what your flyer is about.
    • Name of business and contact info: This information doesn’t need to be the main focus of the flyer, but it s important to list it clearly so potential clients know how to contact you.
    • Cleaning service description: Clearly state what kind of cleaning services you provide. You have limited space and you don t want to bore potential customers, so keep it short and to the point.
    • Specifics: How is your cleaning business different from others? Why should they hire you? Maybe your specialty is cleaning small businesses, or cleaning using only all-natural products. Make yourself stand out from the cleaning industry competition.
    • Call to action: Motivate potential clients to contact you as soon as possible. You can offer a coupon that is only valid for a certain time, or have a special offer for new customers.

    Flyer Printing and Distribution

To save money, you can print your house cleaning flyers at home. However, professional flyer printing can give you a nicer-looking finished product.

In fact, unless you’re printing only a small number of copies, professional printing can be cheaper than using your home printer (since you will use a lot of expensive ink printing at home).

Once your flyers are printed, distribute them in the areas where you would like to provide services. Hang your cleaning flyers in local grocery stores, salons, laundromats, restaurants, or schools. Be sure to get permission from the businesses before putting up a flyer there.

You might even put your flyers on car windows at places your target audience is likely to visit, like the mall or grocery store. You can also mail out flyers, or go door-to-door in the neighborhood where you would like to work.

The report digs into the depth and breadth of malware targeting ATMs, as well as the perpetrators behind the attacks.

    Growth and Innovation of ATMs

Globally we’ve seen a steady growth of ATMs that is predicted to increase to 4 million by 2021, however in the United States we’ve seen only nominal growth probably due to several things including EMV migration. Well that trend appears to be shifting.

According to new analysis by the ATM Industry Association (ATMIA), we’ve reached a new milestone – there are now between 475,000 and 500,000 ATMs operating in the U.S.

ATM innovation around new capabilities and services is growing, as well. This will have a direct impact on brick-and-mortar banks. The result will be fewer and smaller branches using more and more capable ATMs. The machines already offer person-to-person (P2P) money transfer capabilities that provide advantages including increased availability of cash, lower transaction costs, accessibility across currencies, and buying and selling crypto-currencies. According to Coin ATM Radar, there are nearly 1,600 Bitcoin ATMs globally.

In the future we’ll see cardless cash transactions enabled by Near Field Communication (NFC), Bluetooth and iBeacon-enabled mobile phones. Additionally, we’ll have application-based services that are more personal and customizable. However, greater connectivity and app driven services also introduces greater risk. It is critical that similar innovation occurs around the physical and network security of ATMs to keep ahead of the risk evolution.

Physical and network-based malware attacks on ATMs are on the rise. In the physical attack section of the report, our researchers break down the common denominator of many ATM malware – the XFS (extensions for financial services) middleware. Middleware providers use the XFS standard to create client-server architecture for financial applications on Microsoft Windows platforms. Financial applications through the XFS manager using XFS APIs communicate with peripherals such as PIN pads, cash dispensers, and receipt printers. This middleware is the connective tissue within many ATMs regardless of make, model or vendor. Exploiting the universality of XFS to “jackpot” ATMs equates to a huge ROI for malware developers as they can conduct one to many campaigns.

In the network-based attack section our researchers analyze recent noteworthy attacks. In July 2016, Eastern European cybercriminals used malware to withdraw 2.5 million in cash from 41 ATMS in three cities in Taiwan. Others are also described in the report such as Cobalt Strike, Anunak/Carbanak, Ripper and ATMitch. All these attacks and campaigns highlight the systemic vulnerability of insecure corporate networks that ultimately serve as the gateways to exploiting global ATM infrastructure.

Mitigating the risks posed by ATMs to banks and consumers is a significant task. Here are a few tips to help security administrators in financial organizations get started.

Can Chasing Small Customers Lead to Big Profits? The New York Times, best small business.#Best #small #business

Can Chasing Small Customers Lead to Larger Profits?

By ADRIANA GARDELLA APRIL 27, 2011

    Best small business

Darren Robbins and a partner founded Big D Custom Screen Printing in 2007. In its first year, the company, which is based in Austin, Tex., and specializes in printing T-shirts, recorded sales of $325,000 and a small loss.

THE CHALLENGE To become profitable, Big D must determine whether to cater to customers with large printing orders or small.

THE BACKGROUND Mr. Robbins, a former full-time musician who still plays in a band, was nostalgic for the multicolor tour shirts of his youth, which he described as “works of art.” He said he was appalled by the one-color shirts sold at today’s shows. He was also disappointed by the quality of shirts created by some of Austin’s many screen printers and said he could do better.

With that goal, Mr. Robbins and his partner, who worked for Capitol Records, invested a total of $225,000 to open Big D. The division of labor was clear. “I was a natural-born customer-service geek, and he was a natural-born salesman,” said Mr. Robbins, who resolved to take care of the customers his partner brought in. “We wanted to be one of the big boys.”

As his partner traveled the country trying to win accounts, Mr. Robbins ran the shop, frequently declining business from potential customers who requested small orders. Mr. Robbins, 44, who has a background in ad agency account management, said that turning away business kept him up nights. He wanted every call to end with a sale.

By the end of its first year, Big D had grabbed a few big accounts — local video game and record companies that placed orders for 5,000 to 15,000 shirts. But when the shop was not cranking out large orders, it sat idle. Mr. Robbins said his partner feared that small orders would prevent Big D from handling bigger jobs should they come in. But given his ad agency experience, Mr. Robbins said he was used to demanding clients and short deadlines. “With effective scheduling, you can pretty much accommodate any customer,” he said. Following the lead of his competitors, he charged more per shirt for the smaller orders he did take.

THE OPTIONS At first, Mr. Robbins and his partner agreed on strategy. With their industry contacts, they said they believed they could land accounts from major bands. Focusing on high-volume orders made sense to them in part because Big D’s suppliers offered a price break on large quantity T-shirt orders.

But the partners did not realize that most bands were locked in to long-term contracts for their tour shirts. Given that, Mr. Robbins started to wonder about the strategy of chasing down high-volume clients, particularly when he had so many smaller prospects knocking on his door. But, he said, his partner saw no point in accepting orders for one or two shirts. His partner continued to believe big orders were crucial to profitability and that he could best win those accounts by conducting in-office presentations for corporate prospects across the country.

THE DECISION After a year in business, Mr. Robbins threw an anniversary party in April 2008 to thank his employees for their dedication. His partner, however, opposed the modest celebration because its cost meant the difference between breaking even and showing a loss on Big D’s first-year sales. This disagreement highlighted the increasing tension between the partners’ growth philosophies.

Determined to accept smaller orders, Mr. Robbins bought out his partner around the time of the party. The split was amicable, Mr. Robbins said, with his former partner breaking even on the sale and returning to the music business. And then the economy crashed. “Almost overnight, companies tightened their belts,” Mr. Robbins said.

At that point, he decided that no order was too small. He would find a way to take all business, even an order for a single T-shirt. He knew there would not be a lot of competition from the other local screen printers for the small orders. “I noticed they weren’t in a huge hurry to fit them in,” he said.

Big D began catering to those with small needs, including a Houston comedian who wanted 20 shirts. Once he made a decision to take all orders, Mr. Robbins reassessed his costs and determined that he could make a profit on the smaller orders, even without charging the significant markup that many of his competitors charged — a markup that effectively discouraged customers from placing small orders. Instead, Mr. Robbins lowered prices on smaller orders, bringing them more in line with the per-shirt price for large orders. Big D charges $5 per shirt for 40 to 499 white T-shirts printed with one color, while the charge for an order of 1,000 or more shirts is $3.50 per shirt. He was able to take this step and still make a profit because, regardless of order size, Big D’s costs to print the shirts were not that high. Because of the quantity discount, the company would still make a greater profit on its large orders, but Mr. Robbins said he decided to “be as fair as possible” on the smaller orders. His prices for one shirt, a “micro-run,” begin at $25.

He also eliminated set-up charges, a common fee charged by printers, and put his prices on Big D’s Web site, mostly so he did not have to memorize them. “Many of our competitors make you come to them for a price quote, adding a day to the process,” Mr. Robbins said. He hoped that Big D’s transparent pricing would become another way for the company to differentiate itself.

“The competition — and my partner — thought I was nuts,” he said. But Mr. Robbins said he understood his costs and could become profitable “without gouging people.”

WHAT OTHERS SAY Carol Adams, owner of TorlyKid, (a children’s clothing store: “If a business focuses solely on fewer large accounts, and one of those disappears, the consequences can be devastating. We try to expose as many people as possible to our business, and that exposure can only come by nurturing the smaller clients as well as the large ones.”

John Olson, chief executive, Graystone Industries, a pond and fountain supply business: “The partners should have targeted midsize accounts, handling larger orders when they arose and smaller ones to fill gaps. Mr. Robbins limited himself to a niche within a niche with little upside potential. He can run profitably and perhaps make a nice living, but the company won’t be efficient.”

Michael Araten, president, K’NEX Brands, a toymaker: “Like Mr. Robbins, Wal-Mart, Zappos and Amazon.com focused on small customers and transparent pricing, while making it easy for them to get customized products. Small orders pay for the day-to-day. Large orders are incremental profit that leverage Mr. Robbins’s expertise. I’m certain he can have it all.”

Start a Water and Ice Vending Machine Business!

Vending businessThe ice and water vending machine business is a multi-billion dollar industry. It is estimated that Americans now buy over $15 billion dollars in bottled water alone. But the industry is in the midst of change as its deals with the environmental issues associated with the hundreds of millions of plastic bottles in our landfills.

The Polar Station ® ice and water vending system is environmentally friendly. It purifies and stores water with its eight-stage process, allowing the public to bring their own bulk containers.

Polar Station provides only purified ice which is a big selling point. The public loves purified ice and ice is a major product that is consumed every day. The old business model of trucking mass-produced bagged ice from a regional ice plant to the location where it’s sold is costly and outdated.

Polar Station is the modern alternative. With a Polar Station purified ice and water vending system, you will provide for your customers incredible purified ice and water, all for less money and increased convenience, at a healthy profit.

This is a new market delivery system that is a strong alternative, if not a replacement, to how we used to buy ice and water.
