The 7-Step Business Plan for Writers by Angela Ackerman, business plan writers.#Business

The 7-Step Business Plan for Writers

Business plan writers

As you’ve probably heard, there’s no such thing as “only being a writer” any more, and while many might not want to handle the business side of things, to give ourselves and our books the best chance of success, we must.

In May 2012, when Becca Puglisi and I self-published The Emotion Thesaurus: A Writer’s Guide to Character Expression, we had quite a few challenges. Living in different countries, we needed to create a formal partnership, set up businesses, and figure out how revenue would work. We had to learn publishing and take on marketing and promotion. Neither of us had a business or marketing background, so we relied heavily on research and intuition, and did our best to make the book discoverable. (You can read about our initial marketing plan here.)

Our unusual book on showing character emotion created buzz among writers, igniting word of mouth. Suddenly our lives went from busy to crazy as we tried to keep up with the burst of attention, writing guest posts, teaching workshops, and providing interviews. Books sales continued to strengthen, and we sold foreign rights. A few universities listed the book as required reading, and publishers began approaching us. At this point, Becca and I realized how far the book could go, but because we were being pulled in so many different directions, we didn’t know how to best take advantage of these opportunities.

The need for a business plan became our No. 1 focus. Fortunately, my husband is a management consultant who creates plans for many of his clients. With his help, we identified three areas that would help us grow in the year ahead:

  • improving our professional image and brand credibility: creating a website, presenting at conferences and hosting workshops
  • providing new product for our audience: writing two new descriptive thesaurus books
  • expanding into the education sector: contacting colleges and universities to spread awareness of our writing resources

The roadmap we created allowed us to avoid distractions and focus on what would help us grow.

As we near the end of the year, Becca and I now have a professional website, three writing resource books that have collectively sold nearly 50,000 copies, and we increased our credibility through speaking engagements, teaching at conferences, and hosting workshops. In the near future we are looking to create awareness of our books at the collegiate level, rounding out our business plan objectives.

Since much of our productivity and growth are a direct result of forming a business plan (and sticking to it), I want to share steps you can take to create your own.

Step 1: Brainstorm

Imagine your year ahead and what you would like to accomplish as a writer. What will help you reach your goals, whether it’s publication, releasing more books, beefing up your online visibility, or honing your craft? Write down everything that you want to accomplish, and don’t forget smaller goals, as these are necessary steppingstones to achieving larger ones.

Also, choose goals that are within your power to make happen. For example, while you might really want representation, “getting an agent” is not necessarily something you can attain yourself; the agent decides whom they represent. However, “researching and querying all suitable agents” is a goal you can set and meet.

Step 2: Find Your Themes

Read through your list and look for bigger themes. Are there several goals that fit into a similar area of focus, like platform building or writing improvement? Grab some highlighters and group these together. Then, choose a name or tag line that summarizes each theme or area of focus.

Common themes might include

Step 3: Assign Importance

Now that your goals are organized into different focus areas (themes), step back and look at the big picture. Based on where you are now, which areas are the highest priority? For example, querying agents (publication related) and honing your writing skills (education related) might both be areas you’d like to focus on, but if your writing still needs work, it will be a waste of time to query agents immediately. Likewise, if you are winning notable contests and trusted critique partners are hard-pressed to see how you can improve, likely you should make getting your work in front of agents and editors a priority.

This step involves soul-searching and honesty. Sometimes desire (wanting to be published right now, for example) can get in the way of what we actually need (to hone our craft further). To be objective, set emotion aside. Ask yourself hard questions about what your career really needs. If it helps, pretend you are advising a writer friend. If they were in your shoes, what important things would you suggest they work on to get ahead?

Step 4: Pick Two or Three Main Goals

Now comes the hard part: choosing which goals to pursue. Which two areas of focus did you mark as being the most critical? These two themes (say “Education” and “Networking”) should be the primary focus of your business plan. Pick specific goals that will help you most in these areas.

Once you choose a goal, think about the steps you must take to achieve it. For example, if your goal is to “Build a Platform” you might have action items like open a twitter account and build a following, take a class on social networking, and join a group blog. For inspiration, look at the highlighted lists you made. Chances are you’ll find smaller goals listed there that will help you achieve your larger one.

Two primary areas of focus or main goals are good for a business plan, but if you have a third area you’d like to tackle, list it as a secondary goal. Do the same exercise as above and list out tasks (action items) that must be carried out to achieve this goal.

When making these decisions, think carefully about your time. We all have roles and commitments outside of writing, and these things require a lot of energy. Business goals should be achievable, so don’t take on more than you can handle.

Step 5: Set a Timeline for Each Goal

Stick to your plan by setting timelines that fit your schedule. Becca and I chose a seasonal timeline, so we knew which goal to pursue at which time of the year. This helped us meet completion dates. If you are unsure how much time a certain task will require, set a deadline with a fallback date. This way you won’t be discouraged if you miss the initial deadline, and you’ll have a buffer if needed.

Step 6: Bring It Together in a One-Page Plan

A visual helps when it comes to following a business plan. By condensing your plan on one page, it will force you to be succinct in what must be accomplished to meet each goal. You can use a spreadsheet or table to do this (Excel, Google spreadsheet, a piece of paper, etc) or download this template. Here’s the business plan Becca and I created for ourselves:

Business plan writers

When your spreadsheet is filled out, print and display it where you write. This will remind you of what you should be doing and help you make good use of your time.

Step 7: Commit and Challenge Yourself Daily

Once your plan is complete, stick to it. When new opportunities come up, see if they fit your plan. It’s important to take advantage of potential windfalls, but only if they further your goals and you have the time.

Before you print your business plan, type this statement in bold at the bottom: Is what I’m doing or about to do helping me achieve my goals? Before you commit time and energy to new projects, challenge yourself with this question to evaluate if it’s worthwhile.

In today’s publishing landscape, writers must become master jugglers, wearing many hats. Whether you’re published or pre-published, having a business plan is one of the smartest things you can do to keep yourself on track, maximize your time, and ensure that you reach your milestones.

Best Small Business Loans for Veterans of 2017, business loans for veterans.#Business

Best Small Business Loans for Veterans of 2017

If you’re a veteran and an owner of a small business, there are resources and lenders that offer specific financing options for military veterans starting or growing their businesses. To help you make a decision, we researched over 30 different lenders and loan programs to find some of the best small business loans for veterans. Below we’ve gathered our top picks for financing for veteran small business owners and entrepreneurs.

If you have a credit score under 700, StreetShares is an excellent choice to get a loan or line of credit. StreetShares is an online lender founded by veterans with a focus on helping veteran small business owners get the funding they need. StreetShares offers loans ranging from $2,000 to $100,000 and lines of credit ranging from $5,000 and $100,000 for terms between three to 36 months. A business cannot borrow any amount that is greater than 20% of its annual revenue. APRs start at 8%, which is especially good compared to other alternative lenders.

To qualify, you only need a minimum credit score of 600 and be a U.S citizen or permanent resident. Your business must also have $25,000 in annual revenue. Loans require one year in business, and lines of credit require two years. At the end of your application, you can pitch your business and the reason you need funds, which can help speed up the process. Since StreetShares is a peer to peer lender, investors will compete to fund your loan, and more compelling pitches may get more interest. You will usually get funds to your business bank account within a week, which is speedier than a typical bank loan.

  • 8% – 39.99% APRs
  • Terms up to 36 months
  • Lenient eligibility requirements
  • Loans and lines of credit up to $100,000
  • Funding as fast as 36 day

Best Small Business Loans for Veterans with Good Credit: SBA Express and CA Loans

One of the most popular SBA loan programs, the 7(a) loan, offers two types of loans that are great for veteran small business owners. The first is the Express Loan program, which provides basic 7(a) loans up to $350,000 for up to seven years with expedited review from the SBA (a response is typically given in 36 hours or less). Veteran business owners who apply through the Express Loan program also benefit from the SBA Veterans Advantage, meaning all upfront fees are reduced to zero if the loan application is approved. For these loans, lenders will normally want to see creditworthy borrowers with financially healthy businesses.

Another type of 7(a) that is excellent for veteran business owners is the Community Advantage Loan. CA Loans are offered to businesses in underserved markets, including businesses that qualify for the SBA Veterans Advantage. CA Loans are offered up to $250,000 with terms up to 10 to 25 years, and borrowers have access to management and technical assistance. Borrowers must show their creditworthiness and viability of their business idea to qualify. Qualifying is not limited by a business’s revenue or amount of collateral available.

  • 5.75% – 10.00% interest rates
  • Terms up to 7 years (Express) or 10-25 years (CA)
  • Stricter eligibility requirements
  • Loans up to $250,000 (CA) or $350,000 (Express)
  • Several weeks to fund

Best Small Business Startup Loans for Veterans: Accion

Accion is a great choice for veterans with startups or new businesses, as the lender offers special startup financing and educational resources for veterans. Accion is a nonprofit organization that offers loans for underserved businesses, and the organization is committed to helping veterans qualify for funding if they are not currently eligible by offering workshops and resources. Accion has partnered with Syracuse University’s Institute for Veteran and Military Families to offer these programs to veterans and their spouses. If you aren’t eligible now, with Accion’s assistance, you may qualify to apply again in as few as three months.

Startups can borrow up to $10,000 with interest rates starting at 11%. The application takes 15 minutes to complete, and you will hear from Accion within two business days. To qualify, you need a credit score of 575 and must demonstrate that your business has the cash flow to make repayments. Your business cannot be over 30 days late on any bills (certain exceptions are made for emergency situations). For businesses that are less than six months old, the business must be located at home or in an incubator. Other requirements may apply.

  • Interest rates start at 10.99%
  • Terms up to 5 years
  • Stricter eligibility requirements
  • Loan amounts range from $300 to $1,000,000
  • Funds in a few weeks

Best Small Business Grants for Veterans: BusinessUSA

The United States’ government BusinessUSA website is one of the best places to look for federal and state financing programs for your small business, especially if you are a veteran. While BusinessUSA does not offer loans or grants directly, it shows all government financing options for which you may be eligible. To see your financing options, you’ll need to fill out a questionnaire that asks about your business’s location, planned use of the funds, special group status (e.g., veterans, women, minorities, etc.) and industry of your business. After filling in the questionnaire, you’ll see a list of all state and federal programs you may qualify for, preferred private lenders in your state, SBA microlenders and SBA offices in your state. You can also access BusinessUSA through the Department of Veteran Affairs Veteran Entrepreneur Portal.

  • Variety of state and federal financing programs
  • Loan and grant amounts and terms vary
  • Specific financing programs for veterans
  • Eligibility requirements vary

Best Small Business Loans for Veterans With Active Duty Employees: SBA MREIDL

If you have an employee called to active duty, SBA Military Reservist Economic Injury Disaster Loans (MREIDL) are a great option for getting financing to cover the lost revenue or opportunities from that employee leaving. The U.S. Small Business Administration offers MREIDL for small businesses that cannot cover typical expenses because an essential employee must temporarily leave to fulfill his or her position in the military. The loan is meant for working capital and cannot be used for debt refinancing or business expansion.

You can apply online beginning on the day that your employee is called to active duty until one year after the employee completes his or her duty. To apply, you will need income tax returns from the past three years, personal financial statements and current business balance sheets. After you complete your application, an inspector sent by the SBA will assess any damage costs.

To qualify, the SBA must determine that you don’t have other non-government funding sources available. You must also demonstrate your creditworthiness and ability to repay. These loans require real estate collateral for amounts over $50,000 (if unavailable, you can put up other business assets). Interest rates are 4% with terms up to 30 years. The SBA will determine the loan amount, taking into consideration insurance benefits and other funding sources. While the maximum loan amount is $2 million, the SBA can offer larger amounts if the business is an important source of employment in its community.

  • 4% interest rate
  • Loans up to $2 million
  • Stricter eligibility requirements
  • Terms up to 30 years
  • Funding times vary (first come, first served)

Sba financing

SBA Financing is often available for the purchase of a small business and the real estate associated with it. SBA financing, a loan guaranteed by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is the generally the least expensive way to obtain capital for the acquisition of a business.

When your business is listed we submit the company’s financial statements along with our business profile and recast financials statements for review by our preferred SBA lenders. After they have reviewed our proposed deal structure we receive preliminary approval from the lender which means that the lender will fund the loan, with the proposed terms, to a qualified buyer. We advertise approved businesses as SBA Financing Available along with the low down payment as a result of the SBA financing.

Not all SBA lenders are created equal. Different banks will approve different types of businesses and have different down payment requirements. We have a network of SBA Lenders and are able to secure a pre-approval for your particular type of business.

Why is SBA Financing important to business owners who want to sell their business?

  • With a lower downpayment the business becomes more accessible to more buyers creating a larger buyer pool.
  • Eliminates the need for a large seller note.
  • If a business qualifies for an SBA loan buyers know that they are purchasing a business with a solid track record and good financial records.

What is an SBA Loan?

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) does not lend to businesses itself but instead guarantees commercial loans made by banks and lenders up to 75% for loans over $150,000 and 85% for loans under $150,000 . The SBA guarantees that the loans that are approved according to SBA guidelines will be repaid eliminating some of the risk for the lenders.

  • SBA 7 (a) Business Acquisition loans
    • Up to $5 million.
    • Financing up to 75% of acquisition value.
    • Combined with a Seller Note of 10% of acquisition value, Buyer Down Payment can be reduced to 10% of acquisition value.
    • 10 Year term, typically at prime plus 2.5% to 2.75%
  • SBA 504
    • Typically used for acquisition of Real Estate associated with the business.
    • Also used for major fixed asset purchases
    • Up to 90% financing with fixed rate and 20 to 25 year term

Types of SBA Loans:

  • General Small Business Loans: 7(a)
  • The 7(a) Loan Program is SBA’s most common loan program. The 7(a) Loan Program includes financial help for businesses with special requirements in addition to loans for the purchase of a small business.
  • The SBA will loan the maximum amount of $5 million with the 7(a) Loan Program for businesses that meet the SBA loan qualifications.
  • Microloan Program
  • SBA’s Microloan Program provides small, short-term loans to small business concerns and certain types of not-for-profit child-care centers for start-up and expansion.
  • The Microloan program provides loans up to $50,000
  • Real Estate Equipment Loans: CDC/504
  • The CDC/504 Loan Program provides financing for major fixed assets such as equipment or real estate. Buyers can combine the 7(a) financing with the 504 loan when purchasing the business and Real Estate for better financing terms.
  • The SBA will provide a 504 loan according to the value of the Collateral taking into consideration DSCR (Debt Service Coverage Ratio)

More About SBA Loans

What’s involved in qualifying for a SBA loan?

There are two aspects in qualifying for an SBA loan. First and foremost the business itself must qualify. For a business to qualify for SBA financing it must have good financial records, a business valuation that is in line with what the bank’s Valuation Analyst will arrive at (overpriced businesses will not be approved), and a good track record of earnings. The earnings of the company are the key determinant for both value and approval.

The other aspect to qualifying for an SBA loan is the buyer. The buyer must also qualify from a credit standpoint as well as income after debt service. The buyer must have good credit and sufficient down payment (from their own funds) for the purchase. The business must also generate sufficient income, after Debt Service, to meet the buyer’s income needs. If a business generates $90,000 of income after debt service, but the buyer’s income requirements are $150,000 that loan will not be approved, even if the business by itself did qualify.

The Debt Service Coverage Ratio (DSCR) is used by SBA lenders to determine if the business and the buyer will be able to payback the loan. DSCR is.calculated by dividing annual net operating income shown on tax returns by the buyer s annual loan payments.Usually, SBA lenders prefer a transaction with a DSCR over 1.25.

In order for an SBA Loan to get approved for the sale of your business both the business and the buyer have to qualify. The selling price and the purchase price combined with the net operating income.( Only the income shown on your business s tax returns will count towards qualifying the business)

Documents Needed for a SBA Loan

  • 1 year of Bank Statements
  • Personal Background resume

Don t forget, just like all our products, there s also Printfinity, MOO s own technology, helping you print a different image on every card. If you only have one chance to make a first impression, make it a good one!
