OWNING A BUSINESS VERSUS OWNING STOCKS, InvestorsFriend, owning your own business.#Owning #your #own #business

OWNING A BUSINESS VERSUS OWNING STOCKS

When you own stocks, you own shares in a business. That is obviously different than owning your own business. But there are some similarities. The table below explores some of the differences between owning your own small business versus owning shares of stock in a publicly traded business.

For most people the choice would be between buying one small business that you are going to own and operate (and perhaps grow into a large business) versus continuing to work for others and doing some investing on the side .

business. In most cases retained profits help the business grow and its share price to increase over the years.

distraction and cause you to bail out at at inopportune times.

How to Make Owning shares more Business Like

Warren Buffett often quotes from chapter 20 of Benjamin Graham s classic book, the Intelligent Investor that.

Investment is most intelligent when it is most businesslike (from the last section of the last chapter)

You should think of your ownership of stocks as what they are; partial ownership of actual businesses. Do not think of yourself as a share holder (which suggests your ownership may be brief and transitory) but rather as a share owner, a part owner of the business. Where reasonably possible visit one or more of the business locations that you partially own. If you own shares

of Wal-Mart or Costco, remember your ownership when you shop there. Look around with satisfaction (or not) at what you see. If you own Tim Hortons, you can take a certain pleasure out of standing in those long line-ups.

If you can, estimate your share of the profit of each company you own shares in. Profit is the share price divided by the P/E ratio.

Try to understand the business model of the companies you own. shares in. What is their competitive position in the market?

Buying a Business

The following is a good web site that lists businesses for sale all across the world. Most of these businesses may not be attractive (at any price). But I think you will see at least some good ones listed. You can search by Country, State, Province and City as well as other search terms.

Top 10 Sources of Business ideas Opportunities for 2017

What are the best sources of business ideas and opportunities in 2017? How do i find business opportunities? How do i know the best business to start? How do i develop creative and innovative business ideas? Well, i advice you read on.

Over the years, i have met a lot of people that have interest in setting up a business. Most of these individuals have money but they don t know what to invest in or what business to start. Now to the average mind, there seem to be scarcity of ideas but i want you to know that opportunities are in abundance. All you need to do is to work on your perception and develop the ability to see these opportunities.

Business ideas are all within you and within your environment. Some of these business ideas emanate from analysis of market and consumer needs, while others emanate from a long research process.

But the truth still remains that business opportunities abound. So if you are interested in starting a business, but you do not know what product or service to sell, then below are 10+ sources of small business ideas and opportunities.

Top 10 Sources of Business ideas Opportunities for 2017

    1. Look within yourself and examine your skills, talent, passion

In fact, one of the first places to start when looking for business ideas or opportunities is to look within yourself. Most people miss this greatest source of business ideas because of ignorance, laziness and self doubts. If you are talented or having a proven track record in a specific field, then it is time to analyze such skill or talent. To discover what you are good at or what business to start, you can begin by asking yourself the following questions:

    • What skills or talents do you possess?
    • What are your hobbies? What are you passionate about?
    • Do you possess a skill that people are willing to pay for?

    2. Keep up with current events and be ready to take advantage of business opportunities

Yes! Societal happenings, events and trends are also sources of business ideas. If you are expose to reading and watching news regularly and having the conscious intent of discovering business ideas, you will be amazed at how many business opportunities that your brain will generate.

Keep up with current events because it will assist you to identify market trends, new fads, information about industries and sometimes new ideas that have business possibilities and potentials.

    3. Invent a new product or service

Do you possess a creative mind? Then you can invent product or services that have never existed in the past? To develop a creative mind, you need a mindset or perception that see beyond problems. You have to look around and ask yourself:

What is the best solution for this situation or people s problem?

Then you can proceed to ask people about additional services that they would like to see. You need to think like great entrepreneurs such as Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham, Steve Jobs, etc.

To develop winning ideas, you need to concentrate on a specific target market and analyze and brainstorm business ideas for services that the group would be interested on. The key to arriving at business ideas for a new product or service is to identify a market need that has not being met.

For example, the clamor for improved security has led to an explosion of new security products and services; from iris-recognition machines through home security services.

    4. Add value to an already existing product

The uniqueness between raw wood and finished lumber is a nice instance of putting a product through an additional process which maximizes its value, but additional processes are not the only way that value can be added. You may as well add services or combine the product with other related products.

For example, yam flour (Amala and Pounded Yam) is a locally processed commodity but somebody took the pain to refine it better, package it, brand it and began exporting it. That is an example of adding value to an already existing product. Bottled water has been in existence in Nigeria but it was on the high side with respect to price. However, somebody sat down and thought up the sachet water which comes at an affordable rate.

Now how do you develop these business ideas? The answer is simple? Look beyond the lines. Ask yourself the following questions: What are those products you use that could be improved upon? Which industry are things poorly done? If you can answers such questions, you can create a profitable business.

A franchise is just an arrangement whereby the manufacturer or the sole distributor of a trademark, product or service grants exclusive rights for local distribution to independent retailers in return for their payment of conformity and royalties in order to standardize operating procedures. Franchising may take several forms, but the most interesting one is the type that offers a name, method of running business, image and operating principles.

Now how can franchising become a source of business opportunities? Well, you can look at good companies or products that exist in other countries but are not operating your country. Then you can purchase a franchise to that product and become a pioneer in your country.

The mass media is a wonderful source of information, ideas and often opportunities. Magazines, TV stations, Cable networks, radio, newspapers and internet resource sites are all instances of mass media. Just take a careful look at the commercial advertisements in newspaper or magazine and you will discover businesses that are for sale.

Also, articles in the printed press or on the net or documentaries on television may report changes in consumer needs or fashions. For instance, you may read or hear that people are now highly interested in healthy eating or physical fitness. You may as well discover advertisements calling for the provision of certain services depending on skills. Or you might find out a new concept for which investors are needed, such as a franchise.

    7. Exhibitions, Expos and Trade shows

Another means to discover business ideas and opportunities is to attend exhibitions and trade fairs. These are usually advertised on the radio or in newspapers. By visiting such events regularly, you will not only find out new products and services, but you will as well meet sales representatives, wholesalers, distributors, manufacturers and franchisers. These are always excellent sources of ideas in business.

The main point for a new business idea should be the customer. The needs and wants of the customer, which will provide the rational for a product or service, can be analyzed or ascertained through a survey. Such a survey may be conducted formally or informally by speaking to people; usually through interviews or using a questionnaire or through observation.

    9. Listen to customers complaints

Complaints and frustrations on the part of customers have led to many new products or services. Whenever consumers complain badly or bitterly concerning a product or service, or when you hear someone saying ‘I wish there was … “or “If only there were a product/service that could … “, then, you have the potential for a business idea. The idea can be to set up a rival company offering a better product or service, or it may be a new product or service which can be sold to the company in question or to others.

Brainstorming is a creative problem-solving technique, and also a source for generating ideas. The object is to arrive with as many ideas as possible. It usually begins with a question or problem statement. For instance, you may ask “What are the products and services required in the home today which are unavailable?” Each idea can lead to one or more additional ideas, resulting in a good number.

New Jets Threaten Airbus and Boeing Duopoly, Fox Business, business jets.#Business #jets

New Jets Threaten Airbus and Boeing Duopoly

By Robert Wall Published July 16, 2017 Features

LE BOURGET, France — Boeing Co. and Airbus SE suddenly have competition.

For nearly two decades, the two have had the global market for big commercial jets largely to themselves. That is all changing, with three new competitors — from China, Russia and Canada — rolling out their own entrees into the so-called single-aisle market.

Orders for these new jets are few for now, and the Russian and Chinese makers won’t deliver planes for years. The jury is also still out on how popular they will ever be. Boeing and Airbus, meanwhile, are selling plenty of their own, tried and tested work horses in the category.

Still, if even one of these new competing jets is a hit, it could threaten one of the most lucrative sectors for Boeing and Airbus.

I don’t have any problem buying Russian or Chinese aircraft, if a viable model emerges, Akbar Al Baker, chief executive of Qatar Airways, one of the world’s biggest jet buyers, said recently.

The sudden competition is unfamiliar for both jet makers, and it adds pressure on them as they face waning demand in other markets. Bigger, long-haul jets aren’t selling nearly as well as single-aisle, or narrowbody, jets and both Boeing and Airbus have struggled recently with big cost overruns and delays for some of their military programs.

The narrowbody market has been the industry’s sweet spot for years. Big airlines and fast-growing budget ones love them for their size and fuel efficiency. At the Paris Air Show last month, Boeing introduced the latest and biggest version of its 737 Max, with 230 seats. Boeing has a backlog of more than 3,600 orders for its 737 Max family of jets.

Airbus, meanwhile, has sold more than 5,000 of its A320neo family, the competitor to the 737 Max. It started delivering them to customers last year.

Amid that booming market, three new players have swept in. China flew its C919 narrowbody for the first time in early May. The Chinese jet, built by state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corp., known as Comac, has secured more than 500 orders, mainly from Chinese buyers. First delivery is expected around 2020. Comac didn’t respond to requests for comment.

Russia’s MC-21, which can seat up to 211 passengers, also made its maiden voyage in May. It is made by Irkut Corp., which says it has taken in 175 orders and will deliver its first in 2019 as it prepares for further tests.

Canada’s Bombardier Inc., meanwhile, began delivering a 130-seat version of its CSeries plane in November. The CS300 competes with the smallest models of the Airbus and Boeing’s short-haul planes. It is already in service with two European airlines. Bombardier so far has 237 orders for the jet.

Deutsche Lufthansa AG and Air Baltic executives have praised the plane’s low noise and fuel efficiency.

The interest level in the program continues to rise, said Bombardier’s commercial-airplanes boss Fred Cromer.

China and Russia have yet to win backing for their planes from big-name Western carriers. Many of those buyers aren’t convinced the newcomers can in the near term provide the required globally available spare parts and repair services to keep operations humming.

Meanwhile, other plane makers, such as Brazil’s Embraer, have avoided going head-on against Boeing and Airbus and stuck to building smaller airliners.

The Chinese jet may be the most significant threat to Airbus and Boeing. Its ambitions are underpinned by the government’s long-term focus and deep pockets and a domestic airline market large enough to keep local aircraft production humming.

Are they a threat in the next five to ten years to Airbus and Boeing? Probably not, said Airbus’s chief plane salesman, John Leahy. In 20 years, I think they will be one of the big three manufacturers of aircraft.

China has also been working closely with U.S. and European suppliers. The C919 is powered by engines made by a consortium of General Electric Co. and France’s Safran SA. Honeywell International Inc. and Rockwell Collins Inc. are also partners. Like Boeing and Airbus, the newcomers act as integrators of components made around the world.

The Chinese plane still lags the performance of the newest Boeing and Airbus jetliners. It is projected to have a shorter range and be less fuel efficient. But industry officials believe that will change.

The Chinese will drastically change the duopoly, but with the next aircraft, not the C919. With this one, they are going to learn, said Jerome Rein, partner at Boston Consulting Group.

Boeing is moving some work completing aircraft to China to help maintain access to the rapidly expanding market. Airbus already assembles some of its single-aisle planes in Tianjin near Beijing.

Our team has to wake up every day to be mindful that competition evolves and evolves quickly and we have to stay ahead of it, said its commercial-airplanes boss, Kevin McAllister.

Grants for Starting a Business: How to Benefit, Startups, business grants.#Business #grants

Grants for starting a business: What small business grants are available?

    Business grants

If you’re a small business owner or thinking of starting a business, finance is probably your biggest concern. You may be wondering if there is any funding available for start-ups.

The simple answer is yes, but getting your hands on it can be a complicated and rather stressful process. There are countless schemes, each with their own set of criteria, which you can apply for when you’re on the verge of starting a business.

Start-up funding is out there to be claimed, yet every year we receive stories of piles of cash sitting in accounts and not being invested. It’s not because you don’t need the cash, but it’s because navigating through the grants jungle can leave you wishing you were still employed.

    Types of business support

All publicly funded schemes are designed to encourage new and growing businesses, to bring wealth and ultimately create jobs. To help achieve this the government makes available a portion of taxpayers’ money to help and encourage enterprise through small business grants.

This cash gets distributed through a variety of ministries, departments, agencies and quangos on a national and local basis. Most businesses are eligible at any one time to apply for a number of different business start-up grants and support schemes which are distributed in a wide variety of forms.

Government grant resource the business finance support finder is a great tool to help those starting a business find relevant funding to suit their needs and you are able to customise your search by your business location, size, and type of business activity.

Want to read more on grants?

We’d love to hear your insight:

What organisations provide small business grants?

The three main sources of grants for start-ups and small businesses come from:

    1. The government
    2. The European Union
    3. The local authority

    Government grants for small businesses

Government grants for small businesses are available from the UK government, the Scottish Parliament, and the Welsh and Northern Ireland Assemblies. There are over 100 different government bodies which will offer different forms of funding based on specific criteria and objectives. There are often over 3,000 grant schemes running for UK start-ups at any one time, so it can be a confusing process for business owners to decide which organisations to contact.

Here are the main government organisations who offer grants to small businesses:

European Union grants for small businesses

Despite Brexit, UK start-ups and small businesses can still apply for and receive funding from the European Commission until the UK officially leaves the EU. The EU, via the European Commission, administers a number of schemes through structural funds made up of:

This EU Access to finance tool should help you to see if your start-up qualifies for any EU-backed funding.

    Local authority business grants

As well government and European funding, a number of locally-based organisations can also provide your start-up with capital.

Specifically to support and encourage enterprise at a local level, there are currently 38 Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) across England.

Similarly, the government-backed £3.2bn Regional Growth Fund supports projects and programmes that are already in the process of raising private investment.

Click here to view a map of all 38 LEPs and here for more information on the Regional Growth Fund.

Type of government business grants available

    Direct grant

This is a cash award, which is usually given out for activities such as training, employment, export development, recruitment and capital investment projects. With a direct grant most schemes usually require the company involved to put up around 50% of the cost.

The government s ‘business finance support finder’ directory has over 300 direct grants agencies listed such as UK business “innovation” organisation the Technology Strategy Board. The directory also features various local grants providers which are facilitated by the government’s £3.2bn Regional Growth Fund, such as Catalyst for Growth which has direct grants of £5,000 to £500,000 available for chemical start-ups launching in the North West of England.

    Soft loan

A soft loan is a special type of grant where the terms and conditions of repayment are more generous (or softer) than they would be under normal financial circumstances. So, for example, the interest rates may be less, or there may be no interest to pay at all, and the repayment terms could also be for a longer period.

There are hundreds of organisations that offer soft loans and guarantees but the most notable is government-funded scheme Start Up Loans which offers new businesses loans of up to £25,000 for 6% interest with a 12 month repayment “holiday”.

To date it has helped to fund thousands of start-ups with over £250m invested; see if you are eligible on the Start Up Loans website here.

If you’re starting a social enterprise or charity there are organisations such as Big Issue Invest, the investment arm of the Big Issue, which has soft loans from £50,000 to £1m available for positive impact, socially-driven entrepreneurs and also operates ‘participation loans’ where repayment is linked to future performance of the enterprise.

For young entrepreneurs aged between 18-30, The Prince s Trust provides soft loans of up to £4,000, as well as support for your business idea, with interest capped at 3% and repayments spread over a period of two to five years.

    Equity finance

With equity finance a capital sum is injected into the business and the provider of the funds takes an equity share of the enterprise. When the value of the firm increases the stake can then be returned. However, unlike venture capitalists, the expectations and requirements of the providers of public funds are usually less demanding.

It is also worth noting the government Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) and Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS) which help companies raise finance by providing tax relief to investors who buy a share in your business.

    Free or subsidised consultancy

Start-ups can often find themselves in the situation where they are lacking a particular set of skills and there are some specially run schemes which provide this knowledge either for free or at subsidised rates. For instance, the Welsh government runs a business support service offering free, independent advice on starting a business and operates an instant hotline for business queries.

    Access to resources

As with a lack of skills, it can be the case that start-ups do not possess the physical resources or facilities they need in order to develop particular projects. In the same way there are a number of initiatives, particularly incubator and accelerator schemes, that can help overcome these concerns by providing access to publicly owned facilities. One such initiative is the department for business, innovation and skills’ (DBIS) GrowthAccelerator which provides advice and coaching to fast-growth businesses with fewer than 250 employees.

    Technology and Best Practice transfer

The transfer of technological advances and new best practice initiatives can often take a long time filtering down to smaller businesses. The government has set up schemes which aim to overcome this through business support networks and there is now a number of well-established best practice initiatives such as Investors in People (IIP), which specialises in business tools and resources.

    Cost sharing

When it comes to research and development, the costs involved can prevent small firms from taking part. However, by sharing the costs with other businesses, and then sharing the expertise, this problem can be avoided.

Name Availability, California Secretary of State, business name availability.#Business #name #availability

    Name Availability

Corporation, limited liability company and limited partnership names may be adopted as follows:

    • A corporation name may be adopted if the name is not the same as or too similar to an existing name on the records of the California Secretary of State or if the name is not misleading to the public.
    • A limited liability company name may be adopted if the name is distinguishable on the records of the California Secretary of State or if the name is not misleading to the public.
    • A limited partnership name may be adopted if the name is distinguishable on the records of the California Secretary of State.

When determining name availability, names are checked only against names of like entities registered with the California Secretary of State (e.g., a proposed corporation name is checked for availability only against other corporation names).

Names are not checked against trademark or service mark registrations or against fictitious business names. Laws relating to trademarks and service marks can be found in the California Business and Professions Code section 14200, et seq. and United States Code, Title 15, section 1051, et seq. Laws relating to fictitious business names (which are filed with the county in which the principal place of business is located) can be found in the California Business and Professions Code section 17900, et seq.

Prior to adopting a proposed name, the name may be checked for availability or reserved for a period of 60 days.

A preliminary search of corporation, limited liability company and limited partnership names already of record with the California Secretary of State can be made online through our Business Search. Please note: The Business Search is only a preliminary search and not intended to serve as a formal name availability search.

Stationery, signs, etc., should not be ordered and no financial commitments should be made until the appropriate formation, registration or change documents are submitted to and filed by the California Secretary of State.

    Checking Name Availability

A free preliminary check of the availability of a name can be requested by mailing a completed Name Availability Inquiry Letter (PDF) to the California Secretary of State’s office in Sacramento. Email or online inquiries cannot be accepted at this time.

If you frequently check for name availability, see Prepay Priority Telephone Service below for information about the option to establish a prepay account to check for name availability by phone.

Checking the availability of a name does not reserve the name, has no binding effect on the California Secretary of State and does not confer any rights to a name.

    Reserving a Name

A name can be reserved for a period of 60 days. Fees and instructions for reserving a name are included on the Name Reservation Request Form (PDF) . Email or online requests for name reservations cannot be accepted at this time.

The reservation can be renewed to the same applicant or for the benefit of the same party, but not for consecutive periods. (California Corporations Code section 201(c), 2601(c), 5122(c), 7122(d), 9122(c), 12302(d), 15901.09 or 17701.09.)

If you frequently reserve corporation, limited liability company or limited partnership names, see Prepay Priority Telephone Service below for information about the option to establish a prepay account to reserve names by phone.

The reservation of a name does not guarantee the name meets all federal and state requirements related to a specific entity type. Names are reviewed for compliance at the time documents are submitted to the California Secretary of State’s office for filing.

    Foreign Name Registration

If the name is available for use in California, to protect the name for future use, a foreign (not California) corporation that is (1) not registered with the California Secretary of State and (2) not transacting intrastate business in California, can register the corporate name with the Secretary of State by filing a Registration of Corporate Name by Foreign Corporation (PDF) .

    • The registration is effective until the close of the calendar year in which the application for registration is filed. A corporation may renew its registration by filing a new form between October 1 and December 31 of each year. The renewal, when filed, extends the registration for the following calendar year.
    • A certificate by an authorized public official of the state or place of incorporation, to the effect that the corporation is an existing corporation in good standing in that state or place, must be attached to the Registration of Corporate Name by Foreign Corporation form at the time of filing with the California Secretary of State.
    • The Registration of Corporation Name By Foreign Corporation form may be used for the initial registration or for renewal if the foreign corporation has previously registered its corporate name with the California Secretary of State.

To cancel a foreign name registration before the close of the calendar year, a Certificate of Cancellation of Foreign Name Registration (PDF) can be filed with the California Secretary of State.

    Prepay Priority Telephone Service

If you frequently check for name availability or reserve corporation, limited liability company or limited partnership names, you may want to establish a prepay account with the California Secretary of State for Priority Telephone Service.

Priority Telephone Service requires a minimum deposit of $100.00, although a calculation of your expected usage may require a larger amount of deposit. After establishing the account, you will be able to check for name availability or reserve a name by phone. A $4.00 fee will be charged to your account for each name availability search, and a $10.00 reservation fee will be charged to your account for each name reservation.

For information about establishing a prepay account for Priority Telephone Service, please email your request to the California Secretary of State’s Fiscal office or call (916) 653–1233.

Please note, the Fiscal office staff can assist you with establishing a prepay account, but cannot determine name availability or reserve a name.

Canadian Franchise Association, franchising your business.#Franchising #your #business

    franchising your business

    Franchising your business

Do You Own a Business that Can Be Franchised?

Franchising allows smaller companies to effectively compete with larger competitors. As a growth strategy, franchising provides you with the ability to gain market share by increasing your points of distribution (your units). Compared to other business expansion models, franchising allows you to expand faster with minimal capital, as investment at the unit level is covered by your franchisees. Your brand’s growth won’t be limited to one or two cities franchising offers the opportunity to have multiple units throughout the world.

In order to franchise your business, you must have a successful business concept/prototype as well as be able to demonstrate that it can be replicated. Often times, the success of a business can be dependent upon its location or the staff. The fundamental principal for the success of a franchise is its ability to replicate its success.

Once these fundamentals are covered, you must determine initial franchise fees, royalties and advertising fund fees. In addition, you will need to develop several documents including your operation manual, franchise agreement, disclosure documents, training materials and more.

    Get the best help possible

When franchising your business, it’s important to have the expert support of professionals who specialize in franchising. These franchise support services include:

Experts in franchising who can lead you, step by step, through the process of franchising your business.

Lawyers who specialize in franchising will be able to advise you of any legal requirements as well as assist you in developing your franchise agreement and disclosure documents.

Financial experts will help you develop a financial model that includes cash flow projections and your royalty structure. They will also analyze your business to determine if the projected revenues will be sufficient to provide a profit for your franchisees and a royalty for you.

As specialists in marketing a franchise system, marketing consultants can help you develop your brand through a marketing plan, which details how you will expand your system and introduce your brand in new markets through advertising.

    Prepare yourself for success

Attending CFA’s How to Franchise Your Business seminar will give you the knowledge and tools you’ll need to get started successfully. This unique, one-day session covers valuable, up-to-date information on franchising a business and provides the opportunity to speak with expert session leaders and receive free legal and financial advice. To complement your learning from the seminar, you will also receive a complimentary Resource Package designed to help you build your franchise.

    Seminar topics often include:

    • How to attract the best franchisees
    • Strategies for marketing to potential franchisees
    • Legal aspects in franchising and how to avoid the pitfalls
    • How to finance the start up of your franchise system
    • Tips and advice from successful franchisors

    Franchising to expand your business

    September 5, 2017

    Franchising your business

Turning your business into a franchise could enable fast expansion more economically than setting up branches. Figures from industry body, the British Franchise Association, show there were more than 901 franchisor brands in the UK in 2015 and 44,200 franchise outlets.

However, many business owners know little about franchising and they may be missing growth opportunities as a result.

Essentially, franchising allows you to increase your number of branches, but with part of the investment provided by their operators – your franchisees.

Peter Crolla chose franchising when he wanted to expand the family ice cream business. He tested the concept by running two pilot franchise outlets in Glasgow and 2016 decided to launch the Crolla’s Gelateria franchise.

“It took about six months to prepare for the launch, including creating a franchise management team and drawing up the franchise agreements, operations manuals and systems,” he says.

It cost around £60,000 to £70,000, but Mr Crolla says: “It is a lower-cost option than expanding through branches, because the franchisees fund their outlet fit-out, which is £150,000 to £200,000.”

It can also be faster than opening branches. Crolla’s already has two franchised outlets in Glasgow, others in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, and Mr Crolla expects to have eight by the end of the first quarter of 2018.

But not all businesses are suitable for franchising.

Suzie McCafferty, founder of franchise consultancy Platinum Wave, says: “Your underlying business must be successful, as you will be asking your franchisees to invest in it. If you cannot make a success of it, why assume they can?”

Your business must be proven to work, which is why you should run a pilot franchise. The business must be capable of being replicated in different locations and franchisees should be capable of learning your basic business methods fairly quickly.

A business that depends on your personal specialist knowledge, experience and contacts or requires qualifications which take years to acquire is unlikely to be suitable.

    Franchising your business

    Can you afford it?

While franchising involves using your franchisees’ money to expand your business, it still requires a significant investment from you.

Chris Roberts, director of Franchise Finance, which arranges finance for franchisors and franchisees, says: “You face the cost of creating the franchise business, including a feasibility study, franchise development plan, operations manual, financial projections, recruitment plan and more.

“Assuming you use qualified professionals to help you, it will probably cost around £30,000 to £40,000.”

It is also advisable to run at least one pilot franchise. “You need not do this, but banks are unlikely to lend to your franchisees if your model has not been tested and proven viable,” says Mr Roberts. The cost of running the pilot will vary according to set-up costs and working capital required.

In addition, you will need working capital to keep your business afloat until sufficient royalties start coming in from successful franchisees. “The additional working capital is likely to exceed the £30,000 to £40,000 initial set-up cost of the franchise,” says Mr Roberts.

“If you want to borrow to fund the transformation to a franchise, the maximum amount you can access is 50 per cent of the total cost, and you will need to demonstrate a robust and professionally produced business plan.”

Expect to be asked for personal guarantees backed by security, such as a charge on your home.

When your business becomes a franchise, your role will change dramatically from independent business owner to franchisor

Going the franchise route also involves a degree of risk to your business, so legal protection is essential. “A legal agreement protects your business systems, products, brand and processes, so you can control your franchisees and ensure they follow your systems, standards and rules,” says Jane Masih, franchise specialist at solicitors Owen White.

“A basic set of legal agreements and advice for turning a small business into a franchise typically costs £4,000 to £5,000,” says Ms Masih.

It also pays to hire an experienced franchise manager to run the franchised arm of your business. While you may know a great deal about your company’s product or service, running a franchise is a specialist skill, which a limited number of people have. “Look for a manager with the Qualified Finance Professional qualification and a track record of success,” says Mr Roberts.

So when should you get started on a franchise project? Ms McCafferty says: “Your business must be ready, but so must you. When your business becomes a franchise, your role will change dramatically from independent business owner to franchisor. Are you ready to stop doing what you love?”
