Every January I go through my inbox and take a good hard look at the amount of email I get. Then I let the purging begin! As the CMO of our business dashboards startup Dasheroo I’m laser-focused on what’s new, what’s hot and what’s not, so I’m diving in on the bits and bytes for information on growing our business.

This month I started to take a look at the really great content I get on all things marketing and thought I’d share the ones that won’t be getting hit with an unsubscribe.

Most of the bloggers I mention have written numerous books, way too many to list so I just focused on the blogs. Even though I’ve sort of categorized them, almost all of them really cross over all marketing channels.

Marketing. In General

Duct Tape Marketing – John Jantsch is the king at all things digital marketing. He focuses on great tools that small businesses need to know about, customer service, marketing messaging, referral marketing and the list goes on! We love his weekend favs.

– Mark Schaefer is an author, speaker and educator who has one of the top five marketing blogs in the WORLD. His blog focuses on all things marketing and is a must-read.

Relevance –
Chad Pollitt was named a top five content marketing thought leader and top 20 CMO influencer, and he continues to innovate by leading the emerging industry of online content promotion and distribution. He’s amassed a host of great writers that deliver everything you need from digital marketing to diving into social media.

Chris Brogan – Chris is the CEO of Owner Media Group, his posts are all things marketing, sales and business in a fun, interesting, captivating way. In general they just are super fun to read. I always get something from his posts!

Likeable Local – We love Dave Kerpen’s marketing blog. He publishes interesting articles on brand management, podcasts, videos, social media especially for growing local businesses.

All Things Social

Social Media Examiner – Michael Stelzner and team have by far one of the best places to go for which tools to use for specific social networks, in-depth how-to guides for just about everything social media and it is all written by the experts. They also publish an awesome and extremely useful annual report on businesses using social media.

Social Media Today – The world lost Robin Carey, the fearless leader and founder of Social Media Today in late 2015. She started SMT in 2007 when no one was looking at using social media, let alone for business. That publication is awesome, they get great contributors that are thought leaders in all things social media.

Social Media Delivered – Eve Mayer is known as the “LinkedIn Queen” and she is the CEO of Social Media Delivered. Her awesome blog offers you a bit of everything social media marketing related.

Razor Social – Ian Cleary is THE expert on all tools related to marketing. His blog is a must read to find out the real deal on the thousands of tools available today and he breaks down what you need and why.

Content Marketing

Convince and Convert – Jay Baer’s blog covering all things content marketing is just awesome. From SEO, email marketing, social media to tactics for converting traffic, Jay covers it all.

Boom! Social – Kim Garst is a leading authority on digital marketing and specifically, social selling over the past five years. She focuses her posts on all things Twitter, Facebook and now Periscope.

Feldman Creative – Barry Feldman is just awesome at content marketing and SEO and he’s a true genius when it comes to creative headlines and messaging the grabs attention. He also has a must-see podcast called Content Matters .

SEO

Orbit Media Studios – Andy Crestodina is a true expert on web design, content marketing and SEO. At Dasheroo we love when he writes about using analytics to improve your rankings !

Neil Patel – Follow this guy on his journey to 100,000 monthly visitors using SEO. His blog is a clever timeline of all of the actions he’s taking on his site to rank, get visitors and convert them. You’ll learn a lot.

Google Adwords

Wordstream – If you’re doing anything Adwords related, this is the place to go. Larry Kim is a genius at making the most of a PPC campaign. Most articles are about digital marketing with a slant on SEO and PPC.

Instagram

Sue B. Zimmerman – She’s passionate about teaching entrepreneurs and marketing professionals how to easily leverage the power of Instagram to get tangible business results. Plus she’s a bunch of fun to listen to!

Jenn’s Trends – Jenn Herman’s blog is just awesome for finding out what’s new on Instagram, offering amazing case studies for businesses using Instagram and the to-do’s and the don’t do’s when using this social network.

Linked Into Business – Whether is what’s new with LinkedIn or how to use it for your business Viveka Von Rosen knows her stuff. She is known as the “LinkedIn Expert ” and speaks to executives, business owners, and entrepreneurs about the benefits of marketing with social media, and in particular LinkedIn.

Facebook

Jon Loomer – This blog can’t be beat for learning advanced Facebook Ads techniques. Jon has done social internally for the NBA and the American Cancer Society. He writes killer in-depth how-to’s for creating, managing and measuring Facebook Ads.

Andrea Vahl Blog – Having worked at Social Media Examiner Andrea is an amazing social media strategist. Her blog digs deep into how businesses can make the most of Facebook.

Mari Smith – Often referred to as “the Queen of Facebook”, Mari Smith is hailed as the premier Facebook marketing expert and one of the most influential and knowledgeable new media thought leaders in the world. Check out her blog.

STARTING a small business is a dream for many Australians, but it can be daunting.

Here, entrepreneurs who are killing it in a range of industries share their best piece of advice for making your company a success.

1. Deliver a consistent customer experience.

Damian Cerini, owner of cycling tour business Tour de Vines, says you need your business to almost run itselfbefore you look at growth. The thing about working for an employer is that the business model is already set, it s about the execution of the idea, whereas a new business is about testing the idea first and developing the systems.

2. Add a personal touch.

Angus Askew, co-director of commercial asset financing company Magnolia Lane Financial Services, says: In our industry like most service industries everyone is essentially selling the same thing, you ve just got to do it better. Our number one goal when dealing with a new client is to establish a relationship and make them feel special. Make sure you are remembered. We make it our priority to see all of our customers face to face. Create a rapport as this is what will result in repeat business and an income stream for life.

3. Leverage social media.

A strong marketing strategy is essential in every industry, says Anthony Kittel, director of manufacturing firm REDARC. That means social networking on LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or all of the above. Our brand is everything, so whatever we can do to promote that brand and consumer awareness is critical.

Author and Flying Solo editor Kelly Exeter says a less frantic life made her more productive.

4. Write your own business bible.

Matthew White, whose firm Ergoflex sells memory foam mattresses, says the volume of information available can be overwhelming. He recommends writing ideas and tips in a notebook or tablet as they come up. It has helped me make some major decisions, and also saved me hours of searching for something I ve read somewhere.

5. Focus on your specialty.

In the first few years, there can be a lot of pressure to diversify your offering, says Paris Cutler, director of cake decorating company Planet Cake. Stick to what you do best and do it better and with more focus than anyone else.

6. Outsource the things you don t do.

Resist the temptation to chase work outside your offering, and use a specialist to fill in any gaps, says Rhys Roberts from accountancy firm Viridity. I outsource my HR, my IT, much of my marketing and more. The time you free up you can spend doing what you are good at.

7. Aim high and be persistent.

Determination is one of the vital qualities needed when you start on the long road of setting up a small business. Rochelle Miller, co-founder of fashion retailer Another Love, says: Believe in yourself and your strengths. Don t take no for an answer. There will be bumps along the way, but everything has a solution or another option.

8. Embrace a life less frantic.

Kelly Exeter, author and editor of small business community Flying Solo says it s all about finding the right balance for you. I am learning that I don t just need physical space to thrive, I need mental space too.

Designer and illustrator Beci Orpin says she s not naturally business-minded, but has always worked really hard and built up a strong folio of work. My business is all about me: my style and what I create, so an important part of developing that was staying true to myself not worrying about what other people were doing.

Use your best hour in the day to consider ways of moving forward, advises Andrew Griffiths, a small business author and consultant. He does this first thing every morning. Then, each Friday, I find a quiet place and ask myself a question: How is my business better this week than it was last week?

11. Harness your keystone habits .

Entrepreneur and blogger James Clear says we should find the one or two habits or routines that make everything else fall into place. Improving your lifestyle and becoming the type of person who has their act together isn t nearly as hard as you might think.

12. Practise mindfulness.

Freelance journalist and editor Jodie Macleod says it increases productivity, reduces stress and improves memory and focus. Mindfulness is when you are aware of your thoughts, feelings, sensations, breath and everything occurring in the present moment, without attaching judgment to those observations.

13. Every setback is a stepping stone to success.

Lucinda Lions from branding agency Slogan Creator says it s important to stay positive wherever possible, and see feedback, not failure. I remind myself tomorrow is a brand new day, a new opportunity to think differently and make better choices.

14. Hire from within your networks.

When Sarah Wilson from I Quit Sugarbegan feeling overwhelmed with work, she decided to get an assistant. She put a call out to her community, knowing taking someone on would involve sacrifice. Five years later, they still have a successful working relationship. Start out small and then leave the invitation open for expansion.

15. Keep it manageable.

Kate James, start-up coach at Total Balance, says it s important to remember that it s not all about non-stop growth bigger isn t better if you ve stopped enjoying what you do. You need to define your own version of success. Mine is that I need to love my business.

16. Know when to work for free.

Vanessa Emilio from Legal123, says sometimes working for free is worth it. Free doesn t mean offering an entire job or product for free. It could mean a free initial consultation, free component of a project or complimentary muffin with every coffee.

17. Stay excited and believe in your business.

SEO copywriter and consultant Kate Toon says start-ups should think about clients needs and possible issues and create rational responses to persuade them your business is the solution. Inject warmth, professionalism and even humour, where appropriate. Being human beats boring every time.

18. Learn to say no.

Recognise when a client has unrealistic expectations and nip it in the bud early, or consider referring them on, says author and media commentator Andrew Griffiths.

Try a formal, structured response and keep returning to it. Try, Thank you for the opportunity, but we are so heavily committed we can t give your project the time and attention it needs.

If you re on a tight marketing budget, think about how you can trigger word-of-mouth interest. Warren Harmer of The Business Plan Company mentions a small florist that did this brilliantly by 1) Offering quality; 2) Providing value; 3) Inspiring team members to love their job and clients and 4) Creating a physical environment that excited their market.

20. Turn competition into inspiration.

Life coach Kathryn Hocking suggests you research what competitors are doing to help identify what makes you unique. Your relationship doesn t have to be adversarial: they could be a mentor, partner or friend. Focus on your own purpose and connect with peers that have similar values and who inspire you to greater levels of success.

21. Know when to take a dream detour .

Sometimes it s hard to know whether to grab a fresh opportunity or stick to your path. Business mentor Lynda Bayada says you need to outsmart your head so you can listen to your heart. Give yourself space and trust yourself. And you ll find that s half the battle won.

21 places to find the best free images for your business

In the age of content marketing. high quality images are becoming increasingly important.

But for many small business owners, taking top-notch photos, or even paying someone else to take them, is too costly.

One alternative is to find beautiful images that can be used without a fee and that’s where the numerous online collections of free images come in.

We’ve rounded up 21 places to find free images to give your business’s marketing an edge.

But first a quick reminder: always check to make sure that the image you are downloading is available to use and whether you need to attribute the source.

If the photo is in the public domain, it is no longer under copyright and free for public use. Alternatively, if an artist has shared their photos under a Creative Commons license, there may be restrictions on how you can use the image, for what purposes and if you need to provide attribution.

Unsplash has one of the best collections of free, high-resolution images going around and 10 new photos are added every day. On Unsplash you’ll find beautiful photos of architecture, landscapes and flora and fauna.

All photos and videos on Pixabay are available under a Creative Commons licence and can be used for commercial projects. The database is searchable by category or content type.

At Crow the Stone, you’ll have access to beautiful images that wouldn’t be out of place in an exhibition at an art gallery. No attribution is required for these images and you can sign up to receive new images in your inbox each week.

If it’s culinary imagery you’re after, try FoodiesFeed, a database of realistic images of a wide variety of food. Paid subscriptions to premium images are available and you can sign up to receive 20 foodie photos a month.

For businesses in the professional services field, Startup Stock Photos could be worth a look. This database is made up of completely free technology and startup themed photos.

Death of the Stock Photo is a membership-based photo library that aims to be “just like coffee for the modern creative”. Once a member, you’ll have access to high-quality photos that you can do with whatever you please.

Cupcake is the creation of photographer Jonas Wimmerstrom and all the images on the site are available under a Creative Commons licence, including for commercial projects. No attribution is required, although this talented photographer says people are welcome to let him know where his images are being used.

Does your marketing project have a particular colour scheme? Negative Space is one of a number of free image databases that can be searched by colour. All images are available under a Creative Commons licence with no copyright restrictions.

Find A Photo combines free images from a range of other photo libraries, including Unsplash and Startup Stock Photos. Similar to Negative Space, this database is also searchable by colour.

The images available from Freerange Stock are created by an in-house team as well as contributing photographers, who can earn income from advertising on the site. All images are free to use, however, you must sign up to the site to get access.

Get Refe’s aim is to “help organisations and individuals bring ideas to life in a memorable way” by providing high-quality, natural images of people interacting with technology. You can browse through the site’s collection of free images or pay a small fee to receive monthly packs of curated images.

A favourite in the SmartCompany office, Pexels offers more than 5000 free images under a Creative Commons Zero license – which means all images are completely free for personal and commercial use. Around 600 new images a month are added to the database, which includes high-quality images of work environments, people, animals and nature – and just about everything in between.

Does your project need a vintage image? Try New Old Stock. This site is a collection of vintage photos that are in the public domain and therefore free of copyright restrictions.

Another great source for free historical images are public libraries. For example, the State Library of Victoria maintains a pool of around 200,000 photos, illustrations and maps that are either out of copyright or available for use.

For free colourful and quirky images, try Gratisography. All of the photos on this site were taken by photographer Ryan McGuire and are free to use. However, McGuire says he takes better photos when he is caffeinated and so will happily take PayPal donations to his Creative Coffee Fund.

ImageFinder started out as a search engine for images on Flickr that are licensed under Creative Commons, however, the site now also searches Creative Commons licensed images from other stock sites. Think of ImageFinder as directory for free images; you’ll need to download the photos from their original source and check if attribution is required.

PicJumbo is home to 15 categories of completely free images that can be used for both personal and commercial projects. Like many sites that provide free images, you can sign up to receive notifications when new images are available or pay to access premium image collections.

IM Creator not only provides a curated selection of free images – you’ll also find other free marketing tools on this site, including website templates, icons and buttons.

MMT is a collection of vibrant photos from photographer Jeffrey Betts, which are all available for commercial use under a Creative Commons Zero license.

If you’re looking for high-quality, creative images of a New York street scape or European landmarks, Picography may be for you. All photos are available under a Creative Commons Public Domain license.

As its name suggests, Public Domain Archive is a repository for public domain photos. The photos are divided into modern and vintage photos and new images are added each week.

STARTING a small business is a dream for many Australians, but it can be daunting.

Here, entrepreneurs who are killing it in a range of industries share their best piece of advice for making your company a success.

1. Deliver a consistent customer experience.

Damian Cerini, owner of cycling tour business Tour de Vines, says you need your business to almost run itselfbefore you look at growth. The thing about working for an employer is that the business model is already set, it s about the execution of the idea, whereas a new business is about testing the idea first and developing the systems.

2. Add a personal touch.

Angus Askew, co-director of commercial asset financing company Magnolia Lane Financial Services, says: In our industry like most service industries everyone is essentially selling the same thing, you ve just got to do it better. Our number one goal when dealing with a new client is to establish a relationship and make them feel special. Make sure you are remembered. We make it our priority to see all of our customers face to face. Create a rapport as this is what will result in repeat business and an income stream for life.

3. Leverage social media.

A strong marketing strategy is essential in every industry, says Anthony Kittel, director of manufacturing firm REDARC. Every January I go through my inbox and take a good hard look at the amount of email I get. Then I let the purging begin! As the CMO of our business dashboards startup Dasheroo I’m laser-focused on what’s new, what’s hot and what’s not, so I’m diving in on the bits and bytes for information on growing our business.

This month I started to take a look at the really great content I get on all things marketing and thought I’d share the ones that won’t be getting hit with an unsubscribe.

Most of the bloggers I mention have written numerous books, way too many to list so I just focused on the blogs. Even though I’ve sort of categorized them, almost all of them really cross over all marketing channels.
