Are humans becoming obsolete in the workforce? All signs point to “yes.”

As IBM’s Watson proved on Jeopardy, robots are becoming smarter than people. They also make fewer mistakes and they don’t get bored.

By 2013 there will be 1.2 million industrial robots working worldwide — that’s one robot for every 5,000 people, according to Marshall Brain, founder of How Stuff Works and author of Robotic Nation.

Robots are currently analyzing documents, filling prescriptions, and handling other tasks that were once exclusively done by humans.

The next time you drop off a prescription order, you might see a robot behind the counter.

The UCSF Medical Center recently launched an automated, robotics-controlled pharmacy at two UCSF hospitals.

Once computers at the new pharmacy electronically receive medication orders from UCSF physicians and pharmacists, the robotics pick, package, and dispense individual doses of pills.

Machines assemble doses onto a thin plastic ring that contains all the medications for a patient for a 12-hour period, which is bar-coded.

The pharmacy system, which was phased in over the past year, so far has prepared 350,000 doses of medication without error.

This fall, nurses at UCSF Medical Center will begin to use barcode readers to scan the medication at patients’ bedsides, verifying it is the correct dosage for the patient. The automated system also compounds sterile preparations of chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy doses and fills IV syringes or bags with the medications.

Lawyers and paralegals

Instead of paying an army of lawyers and paralegals to review documents, software can do the job in a fraction of the time for a fraction of the cost.

The New York Times reported that Blackstone Discovery of Palo Alto, CA provided software that helped analyze 1.5 million documents for less than $100,000.

“From a legal staffing viewpoint, it means that a lot of people who used to be allocated to conduct document review are no longer able to be billed out,” Bill Herr, a lawyer, tells the New York Times. “People get bored, people get headaches. Computers don’t.”

Google announced last fall that it was working on automated cars as a way to increase safety and help humans reduce the time spent commuting to work.

With human supervisors in the passenger seat, seven test cars have driven 1,000 miles without human intervention and more than 140,000 miles with only occasional human control.

“Our automated cars, manned by trained operators, just drove from our Mountain View campus to our Santa Monica office and on to Hollywood Boulevard,” said Google engineer Sebastian Thrun. “They’ve driven down Lombard Street, crossed the Golden Gate bridge, navigated the Pacific Coast Highway, and even made it all the way around Lake Tahoe.”

Through a partnership with General Motors, NASA’s Robonaut2 is the latest example of android technology. Equipped with a wide array of sensors and dexterous five fingered hands, it will initially handle menial jobs such as cleaning the spacestation and assisting humans in space operations.

However, it could one day venture outside the station to help spacewalkers make repairs or perform scientific work, according to NASA.

Companies are increasingly looking for ways to sell more products with fewer employees. ATM machines reduce the need for bank tellers, virtual assistants can answer the phone 24 hours a day, and self-service machines are reducing the need for checkout clerks.

Retail employment has barely budged over the last year despite stronger sales at major chains. Meanwhile, $740 billion was transacted through self-service machines in 2010, up 9 percent from 2009, reported the Los Angeles Times. That number is projected to rise to $1.1 trillion by 2014.

Although soldiers have yet to be replaced by an army of robots, we seem to be moving in that direction as drones and other machines are increasingly being used in reconnaissance and combat missions.

One example is the the MAARS (Modular Advanced Armed Robotic System), made by Foster-Miller, which has provided armed robots in Iraq. According to Wired, the robot is equipped with a GPS monitor; it can be programmed to differentiate between fire and no-fire zones, to open doors, and even to drag out injured bodies.

If there’s anything we’ve learned from Hollywood, it’s that robots are not only deadly weapons, they are also great for entertainment.

Aeon Co., a major Japanese retailer, introduced a four-foot-tall yellow and white robot at a store in 2008 whose job is to babysit children while the adults shop.

Other models include the Hello Kitty robot, which is perfect for “whoever does not have a lot time to stay with child,” according to a vendor and NEC’s PaPeRo robot, which tells jokes, gives quizzes, and can track kids using a radio-frequency identification chip.

Robots can reach areas that are inaccessible to humans and provide crucial help in rescuing victims from natural disasters. Scientists such as Satoshi Tadokoro of Tohoku University, based in Sendai, have offered the use of their robots to assist in the rescue efforts that are underway in Japan.

Tadokoro has offered the use of a snakelike robot that can enter tight spaces and use a camera to survey them, which could be helpful in collapsed buildings.

For now, the most useful robots could be aerial drones that can provide aerial inspections or ROV’s, which can help locate underwater objects and determine the condition of bridges and pipelines, according to the Center for Robot-Assisted Search and Rescue at Texas A ?>

    Huge rise in hack attacks as cyber-criminals target small businesses

    Hackers are ahead in the cyberwar – businesses need to wake up

    The company’s case is not an isolated one, and experts are warning that not only are small businesses now firmly in the crosshairs of cyber-criminals, they are fast becoming their favoured target – and are often woefully unprepared.

    “SMEs have not historically been the target of cybercrime but in 2015 something drastically changed,” says Toni Allen, UK head of client propositions at the British Standards Institute (BSI).

    “The latest Government Security Breaches Survey found that nearly three-quarters (74%) of small organisations reported a security breach in the last year; an increase on the 2013 and 2014 survey. SMEs are now being pinpointed by digital attackers.”

    According to the latest statistics released by cyber security firm Symantec. more than half (52.4%) of spear phishing attacks, carried out using fake emails – carried out in December last year were against SMEs, with November showing a massive spike.

    The issue of cyber security for small businesses is made even more pressing by new European regulations aimed at protecting customer data. The EU’s new General Data Protection Regulation will come into force in 2018 and could result in companies being fined up to €20m or 4% of their annual turnover, whichever is greater, for allowing any security breaches to compromise their customer data.

    Sarah Green, a cyber security expert and business manager for Cyber Security at Training 2000. says that one of the most dangerous phrases used by small businesses is: “It’ll never happen to us.”

    “Small businesses may feel that they aren’t likely to be a target due to their size and that hackers couldn’t possibly be interested in what they do – but in reality the exact opposite is true,” Green adds.

    “Hackers prey on the knowledge that small businesses tend to have lower defences than larger organisations, usually due to lack of financial and human resources. By their very nature, thriving small businesses are innovative and niche, which again is very attractive to the bad guys who may be interested in customer data and intellectual property and know exactly how to pick out the weak targets.”

    Stephen Ridley, acting head of technology, cyber and data for insurance company Hiscox UK and Ireland and a member of the Cyber Streetwise Forum, claims many SMEs still have much to do in order to protect themselves.

    “Many small businesses are starting to appreciate the potential severity of cyber-attacks. But many still have a long way to go in implementing good risk management,” he says.

    “SMEs are being viewed as a softer target by criminals, and are often a route to a ‘bigger prize’ if they are contracting with larger organisations, who may be harder to penetrate directly.”

    According to Ridley, firms can follow several simple steps to reduce cyber-risks. He suggests using secure passwords such as three random words, installing antivirus and malware software on all company devices, instigating regular software updates that contain vital security upgrades and educating staff on cyber-risks. Another way of helping to improve security is to subscribe to the government-backed Cyber Essentials scheme.

    Duncan Sutcliffe, who runs insurance firm Sutcliffe Co in Worcester, has recently taken part in the programme.

    “I was aware of the increasing threat to both our clients and our business from hackers and cybercrime, but I’m not a techie, so I didn’t really know what to do about it. I found out that around 80% of cyber breaches could be stopped by adopting some of the basics,” he says.

    Alex Fenton. a digital business expert and lecturer at Salford University, says there is no excuse for leaving your systems vulnerable. “We have seen some high-profile examples where companies have cut corners to save time and money.

    “Burying your head in the sand may save money in the short term, but the cost of hacking could range from minor inconvenience, reputation damage, loss of customer data, fines and ultimately company closure.”

    According to the Cyber Streetwise campaign, a cross-government initiative run by the Home Office, major cyber threats to SMEs include:

    • Ransomware – where a piece of malicious software, typically received via a phishing email, encrypts all of the data on the company’s network, with the perpetrators requesting a ransom (typically £500–£1,000) in order to provide the decryption key.

    • Hack attack – where a hacker manages to gain access to the company’s network, typically by exploiting an unpatched vulnerability within the software, allowing them access to the company data. The target will generally be personally identifiable information (PII) on a company’s customers, especially credit card information

    • Denial of Service attack – when a company’s website is overwhelmed by a volume of data pushed to its servers in a malicious manner. These attacks are increasingly easy and cheap to carry out, with some online tools costing as little as £25 per hour.

    • Human error – people are generally the weakest link in any security chain, and a vast number of data breaches are the result of information being lost, or distributed to the wrong person. Even the seemingly mundane can have far reaching consequences, particularly where sensitive PII is involved.

    • CEO fraud – where a criminal poses as a senior person within the firm, either by hacking or “spoofing” their email account, and convinces someone with financial authority to make a payment

    VA Central Western Massachusetts provides psychiatric, substance abuse, and PTSD services as well as primary and secondary levels of medical care to a Veteran population in central and western Massachusetts of more than 120,000 men and women. Care is provided at our main medical center campus in Leeds, Mass. and at community-based outpatient clinics in Worcester, Fitchburg, Springfield, Greenfield and Pittsfield.

    What America’s Lawyers Earn

    It s no secret that the business of practicing law has changed and continues to change in ways that are both subtle and dramatic.

    We ve covered that transformation over the years in these pages: technology-driven efficiencies, niche practices developed around social change, new challenges to the profession dictated by both gut-wrenching recession and fundamental industrial change.

    But while our reporting on this metamorphosis has been solid, even at times prophetic, it s been based in great part on the tools of journalism: anecdote, instinct and the oft-competing wisdom of any experts we can find.

    With this issue, however, the ABA Journal is offering our readers a new and we believe different view of the business and the profession.

    We’ve teamed up with a nationally recognized expert on trends in the legal profession, William D. Henderson of the Center on the Global Legal Profession at Indiana University’s Maurer School of Law. We asked Henderson, a pioneer in the empirical study of the legal industry, to identify and map the movements of jobs and money.

    Using a variety of government statistics detailed later in these pages, Henderson and the ABA Journal have undertaken a study of the business of law that attempts to define some of the important long-term changes in the industry and to identify the influences that are propelling them.

    In this, the first installment of a periodic series, we look at the geography of lawyer salaries, showing where the jobs are and what they pay. Using actual salary data reported to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on employed lawyers whether they are associates or government attorneys or corporate counsel we’ve mapped out average lawyer pay by county. We’ve also defined the top 35 legal markets, which soak up two-thirds of the jobs and 75 percent of the payroll. And we’ve identified 10 smaller markets whose average salary figures may surprise you lesser law markets that are paying big-city bucks.

    Like any statistics, these salary figures often vary from anecdotal experience. And because they represent payroll data, they don’t include equity partners or solos. But they do represent the best estimates we can glean from the most current BLS data as of mid-2009.

    While it is hard for many lawyers to think of themselves as part of an industry as well as a profession, we feel that this new view of the legal environment a kind of business-by-the-numbers will give our readers one more tool to help them understand and cope with the transformational era that is upon us, whether we are ready or not.

    AVERAGE LAWYER SALARIES

    This map shows a range of mean (average) lawyer salaries for virtually every market in the United States. The statistics underlying the map represent the latest data available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics in its May 2009 Occupational Employment Statistics survey.

    Note: Alaska’s average lawyer salary is $104,970. Hawaii’s lawyers average $94,830.

    WHERE LAW FIRM PAYROLLS ARE LARGEST

    This table ranks legal markets by law firm salaries, as measured by the U.S. Census Bureau in its county business patterns dataset, which includes all employers with paid employees in the United States. Total payroll represents gross annual salaries paid by law firms in each market to anyone lawyers, paralegals, secretaries, court reporters, investigators, etc. who receives a regular paycheck from a law firm. Metro area population is the 2009 census estimate.

    WHERE LAWYERS EARN THE MOST

    A NOTE ON METHODOLOGY AND SOURCES

    Except as noted in the table, the source of the underlying data for maps and tables is the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ May 2009 Occupational Employment Statistics survey.

    The BLS data are a representative sample of employed lawyers. The sample includes lawyers employed in law firms, state and local government, federal government, in-house lawyers in businesses, and nonprofits. Lawyers, as defined by the BLS classification (SOC), “represent clients in criminal and civil litigation and other legal proceedings, draw up legal documents, and manage or advise clients on legal transactions. May specialize in a single area or may practice broadly in many areas of law.” Equity partners and solo practitioners are not included in the survey. The estimates for May 2009 are calculated using six semiannual panels collected over a three-year period: May 2009, November 2008, May 2008, November 2007, May 2007 and November 2006. The overall national response rate for the six panels is 78.2 percent based on establishments and 74.5 percent based on employment.

    William D. Henderson is director of the Center on the Global Legal Profession, and professor of law and Nolan Faculty Fellow at Indiana University’s Maurer School of Law. He received his JD from the University of Chicago in 2001. He was assisted by Jonathan Rinehart, a research fellow at the Center on the Global Legal Profession.

    Correction

    In the print version of the March cover feature “What America’s Lawyers Earn ,” the chart of lawyer salaries on page 38 incorrectly separates data for the Washington, D.C. area into two entries, ranked as Nos. 4 and 13. When properly combined, the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria DC-VA-MD-WV metro area is ranked No. 2 with total law firm payroll of $5,991,093,000, total population of 5,366,526 and 50,734 employees. Another chart, “Where Lawyers Earn the Most,” page 40 in the print version, should have included one law school for Richmond, Va.

    The Journal regrets the errors.
