Investor s Business Daily to become a weekly, 20 news jobs to be cut

Investor s Business Daily, which has published five days a week since its founding in 1984, will announce next week that it will become a weekly newspaper and will focus its editorial efforts more online.

The change is expected to take effect on May 2, Talking Biz News has confirmed. The Los Angeles-based newspaper will be put to bed Friday evening and publish early the following week.

About 20 newsroom jobs will be cut as a result of the change, leaving slightly more than 40 in the editorial side of the newspaper. Additional cuts will be made in other departments.

IBD has been profitable, but we recognize that readership trends don’t favor daily newspapers, said managing editor Susan Warfel. We’re adjusting our business model now because we want to move from a position of strength and take advantage of the best growth opportunities in our business.

Warfel said that the newspaper will retain the Investor s Business Daily name because it will publish every day on the Internet.

At one point, Investor s Business Daily hoped to grow to a subscription base of 700,000 to 1 million. And in 2000, its circulation was above 300,000. But the paper had a circulation or 113,038 in the third quarter of 2015. down from 157,161 in 2013. It had 46,213 print subscribers and 62,372 digital subscribers.

The newspaper s website, www.investors.com, added a paywall more than a decade ago, and the newspaper believes that the shift to a web focus for most of the week will allow it to improve its profit margins.

IBD currently attracts over 4 million monthly unique visitors and publishes investment analysis products such as Leaderboard. Several mobile-first product launches are scheduled within the next year.

The newspaper was started as Investor s Daily by investor and stockbroker William O Neil, who has since endowed a professorship in business journalism at Southern Methodist University. It changed its name to Investor s Business Daily in 1991.

O Neil was frustrated that he couldn t obtain data about stocks in any other newspaper, including The Wall Street Journal, that he wanted to use to make investment decisions. Investor s Business Daily s stock listings include a proprietary ratings system.

Its core readers are self-directed investors, especially those who favor growth stocks who take a hands-on approach to their investments rather than leave the decision-making to someone else.

In 2008, the newspaper won its only Pulitzer Prize. Michael Ramirez. the editorial cartoonist for the newspaper, won the Pulitzer in that category.

Talking Biz News interviewed Warfel in May 2015 about the paper s operation. Read that interview here .

Data Scientist

Data scientists mine and analyze data from a range of sources, including customer transactions, click streams, sensors, social media, log files and GPS plots. Their mission is to unlock valuable and predictive insights that will influence business decisions and spur a competitive advantage.

The data explosion – fueled by increased bandwidth and processing power, innovative data analysis tools, and the proliferation of inexpensive cloud-based storage solutions – has placed Data Scientist among the most demanded and lucrative IT careers. Data scientists’ salary and demand are well-deserved, as their findings have the potential to make or break the business. To illustrate this point, a 2011 study from the McKinsey Global Institute indicates retailers that maximize data analysis capabilities could increase profits by a whopping 60%, while the health care industry can reduce operational expenses by 8% – that’s $200 billion per year.

The most successful – and sought after – data scientists possess that rare combination of analytical skills, technical prowess and business acumen needed to effectively analyze massive data sets while thinking critically and shifting assumptions on the go, ultimately transforming raw intelligence into concise and actionable insights.

What about BIG DATA? The main difference between “big data analysis” and “data analysis” is that big data sets are beyond the threshold of typical database management systems. Due to its massive size and heterogeneous structure, big data is often rendered visually, as a heat map or tree map for example, allowing big data scientists to identify, analyze and present complex patterns that would otherwise remain hidden.

a.k.a. Data Architect | Data Analyst | Big Data Scientist | BI Analyst | BI Engineer | Data Mining Engineer

Data Scientist Skills Responsibilities

Typical day-to-day activities and in-demand skill sets for Data Scientists include:

  • Perform data-mining, modeling and hypothesis generation in support of high-level business goals.

  • Need strong oral written communication skills to present data as a concise story for diverse audiences.
  • Big data scientists develop customized algorithms to solve analytical problems with incomplete data sets.
  • Big data scientists often use data visualizations, e.g. heat maps, to analyze and present complex trends.
  • Many data scientists use Hadoop – an open-source Apache framework – to analyze mine big data sets.
  • Some data scientists have computer programming skills – such as SQL, Python, Unix, PHP, R and Java –
which they use to modify or develop custom analytical solutions.
  • Data scientists often work in a team setting, with managers, IT administrators, programmers, statisticians,
graphic designers, and experts in the company’s products or services.

The hourly salary range for data scientist contract positions is $30-$85, dependent upon skills and project requirements.

Data Scientist Education Requirements

The education requirements for data scientists are among the steepest of all IT occupations. Approximately 40% of data scientist positions require an advanced degree, such as a Master’s, MBA or PhD. Others companies will accept data scientists with undergraduate diplomas in an analytical concentration, such as Computer Science, Math Statistics, Management Information Systems, Economics, Engineering and Hard Sciences.

Schools also offer career-focused courses, degrees and certificates in analytical disciplines like database management, predictive analytics, business intelligence, big data analysis and data mining, all of which provide a solid base for a data scientist career. Targeted training programs like these also present a great way for current business and IT professionals to learn the skills required to break into this red-hot field.

Video Game Salary

Video Game Salary Survey

Salaries in the Video Game Industry

One of the fastest growing job markets in the country right now is in the video game design industry. This industry is taking in over $7 billion dollars in revenue yearly. So every employer in this job field is looking for the brightest, most talented new recruits they can find, and they are willing to pay those who fit the bill a very good wage. There are many employers like Blizzard, EA, and Microsoft leading the way and according to a Game Makers Salary Survey this is what they are willing to pay.

Video Game Programmers

If you are a video game programmer. and it does not matter if you specialize in AI, networking or graphic engines, you will on the average, earn more then the other jobs in the industry. The starting salaries are down a little from previous years but that is only because many people have figured out that the video gaming industry is almost recession proof and many college graduates are flooding the industry. Here is what you can expect to make.

Programmers and Engineers first entering the business or with less than three years experience, you can start off by making, on the average, $50,000 a year. If you have between three and six years experience you can plan to earn $66K a year and if you have six years and up on the job you can make over $88K a year.

Lead programmers make a little more when they are coming in, but you will have more responsibilities. The entry level pay for a lead programmer is close to $56,000 a year. Once you have at least three years under your belt you should be averaging about $83K a year. Once you have been in the business for over six years you will make over $90K a year.

Video game technical directors have a lot of responsibilities so they are paid well, even at the entry level. For those coming into the business or having less then three years in the industry you can average $60,700 a year. Once you get between three to six year you can begin to make $73K a year. Those who last in the business for over six years you can expect to make just around $110K each year, one of the highest salaries for this job description was reported at $195,500.

Artist and Animators

In 2006 a survey found that artist and animators were making more money then the previous years and that was at all levels of experience. The largest increases in salary were earned by those with more then three years of experience. Artists have many responsibilities like giving the game its’ look and feel. It seems at the entry level artist may be paid a little less but once you have the experience you can actually make more money then coders. We found that the highest salaried coder made less then the highest paid artist. If you are an artist here is what you can figure on making:

A video game artist that is either just entering the business or has less then three years of experience can plan on making, on the average $41,500 a year. Once you have gained at least three years your earning will increase to $53,300. A game artist that can last in the business for over six years will make $66,700 a year.

Video game animators will make on the average, $46,700 a year for three years of experience or less. There is quite an increase once you make it past the three year mark, you can now make $67,000 a year. Once you have six years of experience as a video game animator you can now earn just over $75K a year.

If you are hired as a lead artist or animator you can expect a salary of just over $64K per year until you have at least three years of experience. Once you have over three years on the job you will begin to make around $67K. Once you have seniority on the job you can make anywhere from $80,000 to a whopping $215,000 a year.

Video Game Designers

When you were younger you probably told your parents that when you grew up you were going to make video games. They probably did not pay much attention to your comments at the time, but now you can actually make that dream job reality. The technical term for those who “make” video games is a game designer. The market for games designers is very competitive and it does not matter whether you are self-taught or are highly educated. The good thing is this position also pays well at all levels of experience. You will also find that the more proven you are in the industry the faster your salary will rise. Employers are looking for people that can withstand the rigors of the job. One of the best pieces of advice for a newbie is to get a mentor to work with.

A video game designer with less then three years of experience will make, on the average $46K a year. With between three and six years experience a game designer can bring home $55,600 a year. Once you have over six years of on the job experience you can average almost $70K a year.

If you are the creative director or lead designer you can bring home $45,000 a year until you have over three years of experience. Then you can start to average $54,000 a year. Lead designers or creative directors with over six years experience will make around $81K a year. The highest reported salary that we were able to find for a lead artist was $180,000 a year.

Video Game Producers

The video game producers manage every aspect involved in creating a video game. They are in charge of every decision being made from beginning to end. They coordinate all the different departments involved, and make sure that the deadlines are met and the project stays on budget. Becoming a video game producer takes a little time and one of the best places to start is in Quality Assurance.

Producers. some times referred to as the project lead usually has a minimum of three years of experience in the industry so we have no figures on what someone who has less then three years experience would make. Once you have had at least three years on the job you can expect to bring home $62,000 on the average. With over six years of experience you will begin to make an average of $80,000 a year.

Executive producers have been known to make, on the average, $50,000 a year. Once you have over six years of experience you can start to command a salary of almost $82K a year. Executive producers with over six years of experience will receive a six-figure salary. The highest salary we found was $200,000 a year.

Video Game Quality Assurance

If you are video game enthusiast but have no technical skills applying in the Quality Assurance department is a great way to get your foot in the door. If fact most producers once started in the QA department and work their way up the ladder

Becoming a game testers is a dream job for most video game enthusiast and you can get paid to actually play the games. You can expect to make $32,000 on the average if you have less then three years of experience. You really do not begin to make significantly more money until you have over six years of experience and then you can make an average of $50,000 ay year.

Any lead QA person can expect to make $40,000 a year until you have over three years of experience. You can then anticipate a salary of $50,000 for up to six years of experience. With more then six years of experience you will begin to make $60,000, on the average. If you are really good and can last in the business you can make a nice chunk of change, the highest report salary for a lead QA is $215,000.

Video Game Audio

This is a growing field in the gaming industry and the average salary has been increasing the past few years. This is especially true for entry-level musicians. Right now it does not matter if you a musician, audio engineer, composer, or a director once you have six or more years of experience you will keep pace with the programmer’s salary.

Sound designers or engineers coming in at an entry-level position cans usually start with a salary of $50,000. Once you get over three years of experience you can make $66,000 a year. A sound designer or engineer will make, on the average $74,000 a year, once they have reached six years or more on the job.

Musicians or composers in the video game design industry will generally have a starting salary of $55,000 a year until you have around three years of experience. Once you have been in the industry between three and six years you will begin making $62K a year. If you have the staying power you can make on the average $90,000 a year once you have over six years in the industry. The highest salary we have found for a musician is $215,000 a year.

Making a substantial living is relatively easy in this field; all you need is a good education and a resilient attitude. The wages quoted above are the result of a survey and adequately reflect the average salaries for each position describe. As with any industry the more experience you have the more money you can make. Now you can tell your parents that “yes, in fact you can make a living playing video games.”

CEOs who work in the United States can be expected to do business with oversea companies, making international business knowledge valuable. Working alongside other top executives, CEOs help establish and choose a company’s policies and goals.

Salary Information

The BLS reported that top executives earned an annual median income of $175,110 in May 2015; however, the lowest-paid workers made $68,600 or less in the same year. The BLS expected a slight decline in job openings from 2014 to 2024 for this career field.

Of the three careers surveyed, job prospects for management analysts are expected to be the best. Applicants for the most lucrative career, chief executive officer, will face very strong competition due to the desirability of the job and the decline in available positions. Holding a master’s degree and having a large amount of managerial experience will improve applicants’ chances considerably.

Planning

The overall site including the access corridor to the A2, totalling approximately 535 acres, is principally based on the Swanscombe Peninsula on land to the east of Ingress Park and north of Ebbsfleet International Station, between the A226 and the River Thames.

This doesn’t mean we are proposing to develop the whole site within those borders, but that we are bringing forward a planning application for that area. The proposed site offers superb direct access by road, river and rail to London and its transport hubs linking Ebbsfleet to the rest of the country and Europe.

We are working closely with Dartford Borough Council, Gravesham Borough Council, Kent County Council and the Ebbsfleet Development Corporation to bring forward a comprehensive masterplan for the Entertainment Resort.

We will make an application in 2018. Following the fourth stage of public consultation in summer 2015 we are addressing all the issues raised including carrying out further transport and environmental studies in the local area. We will be sharing our updated plans with the community at a further stage of public consultation.

Following submission, the Planning Inspectorate will seek views and carefully examine the application to advise the Government on whether or not it should go ahead.

WHAT IS A NATIONALLY SIGNIFICANT INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT?

The Entertainment Resort was the first ‘Business or Commercial Project’ to be accepted as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) by the UK Government under the Planning Act 2008. NSIPs are major infrastructure developments in England and Wales, such as power plants and major road projects, which are considered to be of national importance. From early 2014 the range of schemes capable of being classified as an NSIP has been expanded to include major leisure, sports stadia and business schemes if they are of sufficient scale and represent a substantial economic dividend (For more information, please visit the Planning Inspectorate website ).

Transport

Eurostar links to Paris (2 hrs. 5 mins) and Brussels (1hr 50 mins)

Potential for Crossrail extension

Close to M25, M2 and A2

Potential for river taxis and clipper services

It has always been important to us to create a transport strategy that works for our visitors but also the local community. We have tested a number of scenarios to understand how we can minimise our impact on the local road network and deliver transport improvements.

We have developed two options involving the A2 Ebbsfleet junction access that attempt to minimise any adverse impacts upon archaeology and ecology. Only one of these options will be taken forward.

  • A new dedicated access route will be created to separate Entertainment Resort traffic from local traffic, reducing the potential for traffic congestion at the A2 Ebbsfleet junction
  • Adjacent to the existing HS1 rail line to minimise adverse air quality and noise effects
  • Upgrades to the existing ‘Ebbsfleet’ roundabouts north of the A2 to provide a high capacity gyratory, which should reduce impacts on existing local communities and accommodate future traffic flows associated with Ebbsfleet Garden City
  • Entertainment Resort traffic will use a free flowing route from the A2 to the parking and drop off areas, minimising the possibility of queuing back on the A2

  • As with Option A, a new dedicated access route to the Entertainment Resort would be created that separates Entertainment Resort traffic from local traffic
  • Adjacent to the existing HS1 rail line to minimise adverse air quality and noise effects
  • Local traffic and Entertainment Resort traffic would use an improved A2 eastbound off-slip
  • A new “hamburger” layout roundabout (a roundabout with a road running through the centre) would separate Entertainment Resort traffic from local traffic and provide a through route for resort traffic to minimise the possibility of queuing back onto the A2

During construction, we have a unique opportunity to use the River Thames to bring construction materials onto site, which will further reduce pressure on the road network. As part of the proposals a construction haul route from the A2 will be delivered at the earliest opportunity in the construction phase.

Our work on transport is on-going and we are in regular discussions with key stakeholders such as Dartford Borough Council, Gravesham Borough Council, Kent County Council, Highways England, Natural England, The Environment Agency and Ebbsfleet Development Corporation.

Jobs Skills

If you have already registered for job and supply chain opportunities we have your contact details and will continue to keep you updated with the progress of the project.

We are determined to ensure job opportunities are available to local people as well as the wider employment market. There will be a range of full time and part time jobs expected to include:

  • Over 9,000 jobs (which is approximately 6,500 Full Time Equivalents) at the Entertainment Resort
  • A further 2,300 jobs (which is approximately 1,800 Full Time Equivalents) in the Entertainment Resort hotels
  • Potential for approximately 21,000 indirect jobs (which is approximately 16,000 Full Time Equivalents) through the supply chain and growth from spending in the local area
  • Peak on site construction employment of up to 6,300 jobs, during the construction period

The jobs created will be across a wide range of opportunities including skilled professional roles. Local schools, job centres and community groups are assisting our understanding of the mix of skills and resources available in the local labour pool and this in turn will guide recruitment and training provision.

The Entertainment Resort will include staff training facilities which will enable local school-leavers and job seekers (of all ages) to gain the skills necessary to work within the proposed development.

Our supply chain will be a key component to the success of the Entertainment Resort and from the very beginning of the project we have emphasised how important it is for local, regional and national suppliers to be involved in the process and made aware of the opportunities that the resort will offer.

We will be holding events to give potential suppliers the opportunity to find out more about our services and product requirements.
