The Master of Science in Business Analytics is offered through Mercer’s Atlanta campus in a flexible hybrid format that offers convenience for busy working professionals:

Stetson School of Business and Economics also offers a Certificate Program in Data Analytics.

The Master of Science in Business Analytics curriculum focuses on developing an understanding of the performance of an organization through data and statistical methods. Students learn to become effective analysts and informed users of big data through examination of several key topics:

  • Online analytical processing (OLAP)
  • Fact-based management to drive decision-making

Students enrolled in the Master of Science in Business Analytics program understand the need to interpret and analyze big data to inform effective decision-making. Students are experienced in their industry and are seeking an advanced degree in a highly sought-after skill set. A structured curriculum and Saturday class schedule are attractive for the busy leader who has a varied week-day schedule. The average age is 38 years old with 16 years of work experience.

Applicants for the Master of Science in Business Analytics program must hold a bachelor’s degree with a qualifying grade point average from a regionally accredited institution; a major in business is not required.

Unofficial copies of the score report may be included with the application for initial review and evaluation, but an official score report will be required for applicants who are offered admission.

    Applicants who completed all or part of their education abroad are required to have their foreign educational credentials evaluated by an independent evaluation service. A Course-by-Course and Grade Point Average Equivalent Evaluation is required for admission. You must submit an official sealed copy of your evaluation with your application materials.

    Master of Science in Computer Information Systems concentration in Security

    The Master of Science in Computer Information Systems concentration in Security provides in-depth knowledge of emerging security threats and solutions to prepare technical leaders to identify, develop, and implement highly secure systems and networks that support organizational goals.

    Students who complete the Computer Information Systems master’s degree concentration in Security will be able to demonstrate:

    • Advanced knowledge in the analysis and documentation of requirements for architecture, design, and implementation of computer applications systems.
    • Proficiency in software and computing skills as they pertain to the design and implementation of database systems, data communications, systems analysis, and design.
    • Competence sufficient to identify current and emerging information technologies that may have strategic value for enterprise; assess where those technologies have value; and manage the implementation of those technologies in the enterprise.
    • Advanced knowledge of information security concepts, governance, biometric systems, and database systems security, as well as network security and cryptography.
    • Proficiency in risk management, such as asset assessments, architectural solutions, modeling, and design.
    • Competence in security policies, processes, technology, and operations.

    A total of 40 credits is required. Students must complete both the Core Curriculum and the Concentration Requirements.

    MET CS 625 Business Data Communication and Networks

    This course presents the foundations of data communications and takes a bottom-up approach to computer networks. The course concludes with an overview of basic network security and management concepts. Prereq: MET CS 200, or instructor’s consent. This course may not be taken in conjunction with MET CS 425 (undergraduate) or MET CS 535. Only one of these courses can be counted towards degree requirements. [ 4 cr. ]

    Students who have completed courses on core curriculum subjects as part of their undergraduate degree program or have relevant work-related experience may request permission from the Department of Computer Science to replace the corresponding core courses with graduate-level computer information systems electives. Please refer to the MET CS Academic Policies Manual for further details.

    Concentration Requirements

    In addition to the MS in Computer Information Systems core curriculum (20 credits), students pursuing a concentration in Security must also take the following five required courses and electives:

    MET CS 546 Quantitative Methods for Information Systems

    The goal of this course is to provide Computer Information Systems students with the mathematical fundamentals required for successful quantitative analysis of problems in the field of business computing. The first part of the course introduces the mathematical prerequisites for understanding probability and statistics. Topics include combinatorial mathematics, functions, and the fundamentals of differentiation and integration. The second part of the course concentrates on the study of elementary probability theory, discrete and continuous distributions. Prereq: Academic background that includes the material covered in a standard course on college algebra or instructor’s consent. [ 4 cr. ]

    MET CS 599 Biometrics

    In this course we will study the fundamental and design applications of various biometric systems based on fingerprints, voice, face, hand geometry, palm print, iris, retina, and other modalities. Multimodal biometric systems that use two or more of the above characteristics will be discussed. Biometric system performance and issues related to the security and privacy aspects of these systems will also be addressed. [ 4 cr. ]

    MET CS 674 Database Security

    The course provides a strong foundation in database security and auditing. This course utilizes Oracle scenarios and step-by-step examples. The following topics are covered: security, profiles, password policies, privileges and roles, Virtual Private Databases, and auditing. The course also covers advanced topics such as SQL injection, database management security issues such as securing the DBMS, enforcing access controls, and related issues. Prereq: MET CS 579 or MET CS 669; or instructor’s consent. [ 4 cr. ]

    MET CS 713 Advanced Digital Forensics

    This course provides an introduction to the advanced digital forensic topic relating to malicious software (malware), which represents an increasing information security threat to computer systems and networks. Students will review software engineering design fundamentals and reverse engineering techniques utilized to conduct static and dynamic forensic analysis on computer systems and networks. Students will learn about the importance of forensic principles, legal considerations, digital evidence controls, and documentation of forensic procedures. This course will incorporate demonstrations and laboratory exercises to reinforce practical applications of course instruction and will require an independent research paper related to the course topic. Prereq: MET CS 693 and MET CS 703; or instructor’s consent. [ 4 cr. ]

    MET CS 789 Cryptography

    The course covers the main concepts and principles of cryptography with the main emphasis put on public key cryptography. It begins with the review of integers and a thorough coverage of the fundamentals of finite group theory followed by the RSA and ElGamal ciphers. Primitive roots in cyclic groups and the discrete log problem are discussed. Baby-step Giant-step and the Index Calculus probabilistic algorithms to compute discrete logs in cyclic groups are presented. Naor — Reingold and Blum — Blum — Shub Random Number Generators as well as Fermat, Euler and Miller-Rabin primality tests are thoroughly covered. Pollard’s Rho, Pollard’s and Quadratic Sieve factorization algorithms are presented. The course ends with the coverage of some oblivious transfer protocols and zero-knowledge proofs. There are numerous programming assignments in the course. Prereq: MET CS 248 and MET CS 566; or instructor’s consent. [ 4 cr. ]

    MET CS 799 Advanced Cryptography

    This course builds on the material covered in CS 789 Cryptography. It begins with the coverage of commutative rings, finite fields, rings of polynomials, and finding of the greatest common divisor in the ring of polynomials. Irreducible polynomials are discussed. Field extensions and fields F [x]/P are thoroughly covered. The main emphasis is put on elliptic curves over F and F and the ElGamal cipher on elliptic curves is presented. Block ciphers DES and double and triple DES are introduced. AES and WHIRLPOOL block ciphers and modes of operation are covered. The course continues with the introduction of message integrity and message authentication. In the last part of the course cryptographic hash functions SHA-512 and WHIRLPOOL as well as various digital signatures are introduced. Finally, entity authentication and key management issues are discussed. Prereq: MET CS 789; or instructor’s consent. [ 4 cr. ]

    Fire science is the area of study that firefighters pursue prior to entering a fire department. Though many regions require only a high school education, higher levels of education in this field allow for diversification in job opportunities within a given department. Firefighters are responsible for putting out fires and rescuing individuals that may be contained in buildings or locations that are dangerous and possibly deadly at great personal risk.

    Education and Schools

    Individuals typically receive an education in fire science through schools that offer it as a postsecondary certificate or degree. Some schools offer bachelor level education, though this is comparatively rare. Individuals will learn about fire, specifically how fires are started, what types of fires may be encountered, how to combat such fires, how to handle fires in different settings, and other important information. Individuals armed with this education are able to apply to the fire department, and assuming physical standards are met, will begin their career.

    There’s an evolutionary arms race going on in the insect world. Except rather than fighting over weapons and weapons defenses, these beetles are evolving the craziest dicks and dick-defenses.

    Some male beetles are traumatic mates—like lions and some snakes, they’ve got spiky genitals meant to hurt females while boning. An international team of researchers wanted to know how the male beetles evolved such wild genitalia, and how the females evolved right back to protect themselves.

    “The extraordinary genitalia and reproductive traits of males of this insect have spurred our interests for some time,” Göran Arnqvist, professor in animal ecology at the University of Uppsala in Sweden, told Gizmodo. That means they want to know “why males have such nasty genitalia and how females cope with that.”

    These researchers peeped the privates of 13 beetle populations—specifically, a few hundred cowpea seed beetles, a very common species of legume-loving bug. They observed reproductive traits, like male genital spine length and injuriousness, and the female defenses, including their immune systems and the volume of their reproductive tracts, with micro-CT scanners. As you’d expect, their analysis found that the spinier the male genital, the stronger the female’s. Dang.

    Spiny genitals aren’t just some outrageous evolutionary display of masculinity. Er, actually, they kind of are. “Males benefit by passing signals to the female through the wall of the copulatory duct,” said Arnqvist. “The signaling substances make her lay more eggs and make her use that male’s sperm to fertilize her eggs, rather than other males.” The female beetles are boning several males at once, so the one with the spiniest dick might be most likely to become the father.     But in response to evolutionary dick-measuring contest among males, the females have had to adapt, too. The spines scar the copulatory duct pretty badly, so females are better off with thicker duct walls.

    This study just shows a correlation between two traits, so it’s worth being cautious about its results.     The MS Program in Forensic Science at Arcadia University provides high quality, competent and professional master’s level forensic science education and training in the areas of forensic biology, chemistry, toxicology and trace evidence analysis. Students in this program complete coursework in all four areas of forensic science listed above. This generalist approach to graduate study in forensic science makes for a well rounded educational experience.     Educational Leadership and School Improvement

    This route provides a broad-based view of educational leadership and school improvement, both through the explicit and focused study of specific concepts and issues, and through their application in the conduct of individual research projects. The teaching team draw on their research to illustrate ideas, and occasionally welcome visiting academics to enrich the route still further. Students are encouraged to share their experiences and perceptions, and to learn from each other while relating knowledge, principles and insights to their own contexts. Participants come with varied backgrounds, from the UK and overseas and as such the course has an international perspective.

    We aim to offer participants the opportunity to develop:

    • an advanced knowledge and understanding of educational leadership and school improvement, including the ‘Leadership for Learning’ framework;
    • a familiarity with a range of frameworks for understanding pupil, professional and organisational learning;
    • a set of skills for analysing educational leadership and school improvement issues and practices;
    • the ability to understand and contribute to the leadership of educational initiatives and contribute to informed development of policy and practice in educational contexts.

    What does this course offer?

    The opportunities for learning on the ELSI route are designed to reflect our conceptions of learning and leadership and the principles and values of ‘Leadership for Learning’. This means that whilst the Faculty lecturers take responsibility for the organisation of the route and for supporting you, there is an expectation that you take responsibility for your own learning, and both contribute to and learn from other members of the group. Students come from different backgrounds and with a variety of experiences, which adds a real richness to the group: we aim to draw upon your own knowledge and experiences and encourage you to share these sensitively with others. As a community of learners we are interdependent.

    How is the course organised?

    Students on the MPhil course complete the course in one year and have teaching sessions throughout the week. Students on the MEd course complete the course part time over two years and have one teaching session per week on a Wednesday afternoon into early evening.

    During sessions you will experience a variety of face-to-face activities offering opportunities for learning. For example, there may be a lecture to the whole group, discussions, small group activities, and student presentations. You will also be expected to engage in self-directed work and study, sometimes with other students in small groups, and sometimes on your own. You will be encouraged to develop critical friendship groups with fellow students, and to both give and gain support through these groups. These will complement your one-to-one supervisions with a lecturer that focus upon your assessed assignments.

    The content is covered through eight interrelated themes (described below). In 2016-17, full time students will follow all 8 themes. Part time students will study themes 5-8 in 2016-17, and those continuing to their second year in 2017-18 will study themes 1-4.

    Research Method Strand

    All of our Masters degrees are designated research degrees in education. This means that a key part of the degree involves developing a good understanding of a wide range of empirical and non-empirical research methods (including techniques for collecting and analysing qualitative and quantitative data) and then applying these research methods to practical issues in education. Students develop an understanding of different research strategies, foster skills in appraising and synthesising published research studies and acquire the understanding and skills necessary for designing, conducting, analysing, interpreting and reporting a small-scale research study. Discussion of educational research methodology is integral to the ELSI sessions, and the second essay and thesis explicitly assess knowledge and understanding of research methods.

    All students on the ELSI route also attend a generic research methods strand, accounting for approximately one-third of the whole programme. Methods sessions are essential for a research-based Masters degree and constitute about one-third of the whole programme. The research methods strand covers a broad range of social science research methods and is essential for Masters level understanding and critical engagement with the research literature. It offers opportunities and encouragement to apply the knowledge gained to your thematic area, and vice versa, as well as introducing research methods beyond those commonly used in ELSI.
