Master of Education

Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma

The Sydney School of Education and Social Work’s Master of Education (MEd) is one of the largest postgraduate coursework programs of its kind in Australia, and is designed to develop and support the careers of teaching professionals, education administrators, researchers and policy makers. It does not lead to a professional teaching qualification. Applicants interested in a graduate-level teaching qualification should consult the Master of Teaching pages.

The MEd is a flexible program, allowing students to specialise in one of six designations or, alternatively, graduate with a general Master of Education degree.

Because the MEd is a fully articulated program, each designation offered at master’s level can also be taken at the shorter graduate certificate and graduate diploma levels. The graduate certificate consists of four units of study; the graduate diploma six ; and the master’s eight .

Graduate certificate and graduate diploma students receive full credit for the units they have completed if they choose to subsequently enrol in a master’s program.

Why choose the University of Sydney?

The faculty offers approximately 70 units of study in its postgraduate coursework programs, making it one of the largest graduate programs in Australia.

Courses are taught by staff who are active researchers in their fields and who ensure that the contents of units of study reflect the latest theory and research in the area. Staff members have extensive experience in teaching and make use of a variety of teaching techniques to ensure student engagement and understanding.

A common pattern in units of study is for the lecturer to introduce key concepts in a scaffolded manner through journal readings, collaborative and individual student activities, and lecturer exposition during the first half of the semester. In the second half of the semester students take responsibility for the presentation of seminar papers on topics chosen from the unit outline.

Entry requirements

Proof of English-language proficiency must be provided by certain domestic and all international students for whom English is a second language.

With the exception of the Sports Coaching and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) specialisations, applicants to all levels of the articulated certificate/diploma/master’s course must satisfy one of the following criteria:

  • a bachelor’s degree and either the Bachelor of Teaching, Master of Teaching or Graduate Diploma in Education or equivalent qualification; or
  • a bachelor s degree or equivalent qualification and either the completion of postgraduate studies, or professional experience equivalent to two years full-time in a field considered by the Faculty to be appropriate to the program of study.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

Applicants to the TESOL designation must satisfy one of the following criteria:

    • a bachelor s degree or equivalent qualification and either a postgraduate English language teaching qualification or at least two years full-time English language teaching experience; or

    Course structure

The MEd articulated program is offered in two forms generalist and specialist.

    Generalist

The generalist program is best suited to those students who have a broad range of interests and wish to select units of study from across the entire postgraduate program.

Master s candidates complete three units of study from one specialist area (usually two core units and one elective), one capstone unit, and the balance of units from the entire range of postgraduate units offered by the Faculty. Graduate Diploma candidates complete two core units from one specialist area and four units from the entire range of postgraduate units offered by the Faculty. Graduate Certificate candidates complete four units from the entire range of postgraduate units offered by the Faculty.

    Specialist

The ‘specialist’ or ‘designated’ coursework program allows students to specialise in a particular area of interest, graduating with an award that indicates their area of specialisation. Units of study are prescribed for these courses and are divided into core, elective and capstone. A specific number of core units, which varies according to the designation chosen, must be completed by candidates for each level of award.

The following specialist areas are currently offered:
